I have a 1980 4x4 Ford Bronco and my camshaft has a flat lobe.I'm sure my motor has pretty high miles by the way the valve covers looked.I need to know what type of replacment cam I should put in.I'd like to be able to go up alittle,maybe a dual pattern or something.Any help would really be appreciated.And maybe someone can show me some links to some good sites that have price lists and cam and lifters set....Thanks Josh
Just make sure you do some basic matching, carb/intake to cam. The smoothest, most powerfull engines I've been around are high-pro factory. A guy can bolt lots of cool stuff to an engine, but if things aren't working alltogether, you'll fight rich, or lean problems>
Best suggestion stay with stock cam grind if you are not doing a full rebuild. Check out the PAW ads in 4x4 magizines or try Summit Racing for reliable cam parts (stock or improved). Check the 351/400M message board.
Well I started takin everything apart and when I got to the lifters they were a real pain.I had my magnet and the lifter would only come out so far so I had to grab it with a visegrip and twist and pull twist and pull,It took me an hour to do all of them.And after I got them all out I decided to feel the cam through the holes with my finger My camshaft Broke at the rear of the motor.How am I gonna get the broke peice out??????
You should be able to work the broken piece to the front of the motor...maybe grab ot with a magnet after you work it loose. I would attack it through the lifter holes if you have the intake off completely.
Replace the bearings... consider how much work is involved to get to that point and I am sure it is not something that you want to do twice. This will also help the new camshaft.

The filter will only do so much. You can bet the cam bearings are shot. Your gonnna have to pull the motor to install cam bearings, you can reach thru the front of the engine and knock the rest of the cam and the rear plug out the back...all it is in the back is a glorified freeze plug holding the cam in in back.
