Why Replace the Power Elbow ?

I guess I missed this,, But what does replacing the power Elbow do for the 6.0 ? Got a 06' F-350 6.0,,19 K miles, all stock, and running great !

More and smoother air flow, and all subsequent benefits of that.

For me, I wanted better flow at low RPM to help in town mileage and towing/hauling mileage. So far, it is looking good at about .5-.6 better mileage in town for me. I expect to see an increase towing/hauling too. I'll find out this weekend or next.

I'm all for an upgrade that increases power without adding stress. I think in general intake/exhausts do that. Since the air filter is already good on a 6.0, I've only made two mods so far, the zoodad and now the Intake Elbow. I have a Walker BTM on the way to use with the stock exhaust.

The way I look at it, I'm most interested in lower rpm efficiency, so going with a large exhaust and chip/tuner don't do much for me. On the other hand these small mods do help the air flow and so far all help my mileage. The zoodad helping the higher speed breathing and the intake elbow helping mostly the lower rpm breathing/mileage from what I've been able to determine.

(Drinks some water).. Ahem... (Begins Physics Debate).. (In the greatest Billy Madison Debate Voice)..

The effects of a sharp 90 degree turn seen on the stock elbow causes the airflow to bunch up at the rear. About 30% of the available inlet area to the engine is useless and the overall pressure drop between Stock and the new Power Elbow is 2PSI. In order for the engine to achieve the same amount of boost at the engine, the turbocharge is required to work harder to overcome the pressure drop. With stock elbows you result in higher EGTs, Lower Fuel Economy and more stress on the Turbocharger.

By switching to the mandrel bent Power Elbow, you are increaseing the airflow resistance by 30%. Although you will see a drop in standard Boost PSI, that is no reason to be concerned. What you are doing is allowing the Turbo Charger to produce more power with less boost then before as the Aerodynamics of the Air flow has been modified. It produces a more responsive low end throttle advance and a greater fuel economy.

Its much like the Physics of wing. In order for a wing to float (as you will) it must be smooth and conformed for air to travel over with little resistance. Hence the concept of Flaps, Flaps break the aerodynamics of a wing in order to produce drag and resistance. The power elbow remedies that by allowing the airflow to move through the IC into the intake with less resistance. When air hits a resistance, in this case the stock elbow, it will increase pressure and cause a direction mishap. Therefore the Charger must work twice as hard to bring the air in.

(End of Academic Triatholon)

Plus it looks REALLY cool and it's a mod =D

Get one, you'll never be sorry! I can bet on that..

brunelli principle...the air has to move faster over the TOP of the wing, thus it has less force or pressure...anyways I was offered the elbow as a trial by a gentleman who owns a diesel performance shop...and as I posted earlier he laughed at me for being naive about such add ons. Not fully understanding his explanations of the mechanics of the intake system and such he finally offered to "prove it" to me by a taste test of stock vs. elbow (of my choice)...he swears there is no noticable difference, ALTHOUGH there is a measureable difference...I do not doubt his experience or knowledge, but not sure if I feel like spending the time to prove to myself he's right...really dosen't matter anymore to me...my truck does good enough for me, but to those doing all the mods that's cool too, if I had extra cash I'd likely be doing that too...but I spent all mine just to get the truck...anyways I'll be seeing him again tonight and I'm sure he's going to want to "test" me.

Ok guys thanks for the explenation of the Elbow,,I did take a look at the one on my 6.0 this AM,,and it does look like about a 90 degree angle,,,so better flow, means ,Better GO,, Gotta love that. Thanks

I might but I'm kinda lazy about the whole thing; I mean this guy really knows his 6.0Ls, he even has a certified Ford Diesel Tech who moonlights for some of their personal work. Supposedly he's building a truck for Bonneville...if I feel I have the time I might do it, but if I like it and want it then I have to pay for it. I should also note he and I have bought our trucks from the same dealer and he did say I might be in for some problems warranty wise too. Last week he told me his truck was going in to have the engine torn down for aftermarkets parts prior to his build up, this is his brand new 2007 still with paper plates...

I'm hoping to be able to report some useful information in a week or so. I just ordered an '05 style elbow for my '03 (I have a dummy throttle body so I should be able to remove it). I have a 580 mile trip (1160 Round Trip) from N.IL to S.W Missouri over Easter weekend. I plan on driving down stock and change the elbow in MO and drive back with the elbow to compare fuel economy. I plan on controlling as many variables as possible like consistent speeds in each state and I'll fuel up each way around St. Louis so I can break down the mileage between each state. I-39 and I-55 in IL are very flat and I-44 in MO gets some hilly sections that may react differently in relation to fuel economy. Anyway, it will at least make the drive more interesting.
