I have A 1988 6 CYL f250 same motor as the F150 so I hope this posted in the right place.
Here is the problem;
I can let the truck run for like 15 minutes and it will shut itself off and I can not restart it for like 15 to 20 minutes.
I have replaced the Distributor out of a good running truck to see if this corrected issue (did not change any problems)
I then changed the sensor on the side of the distributor still have same problem
Changed the computer. same problem still.
change the evg valve on top og the intake still same problems
changed the coil. still same problem.
changed the pvc valve still same problems
Test fuel pressure on rail and it sprays hard and good.
Running out of things to change.
Any ideas?
recap: truck runs fine for 15 to 20 minutes then shuts off, have to wait another 15 to 20 minutes to restart and it will and it will run fine.
We changed the computer and reset the computer by letting it run with out cable on for like 10 minutes then put cable back on.
Have not been able to get it to a garage to have it plugged in because I am in country kinda boonies and It will take me hours to drive and a tow would be like over 100 bucks... trying to figure soemthing out
running it with the cable off is a bad bad bad bad no no. the way to clear the computer is to disconnect the cable for 5 minets with the engine OFF. you may have fried the new computer and everything else. you through away the codes when you changed the computer. always get the codes first.
Yikes............... Hopefully nothing fried. It still starts up and does exactly the same thing as it did before I screwed up by running it with cable off []
Hopefully not see if the computer is storing any codes. did the computer come off a vehicle exactly like yours. some are still different if the car was originally delivered to a different state. reset your enircea fuel cut off. check all connections and clean all of the connectors. some of those had a problem with the ignition switch, it would get hot and open the circuit. or even catch fire. see if it is getting warm after it is on for a while.
dont replace anything else untill you know it is bad it only complicates things. make sure the problam is ether fuel or spark. then git back to us here we will figure it out. this site has peple way smarter than I am and you will get it going.
thanks... and yes I was carful to get same year and model from yard when we go the new to me computer... I will check spark thing next then and get back
thanks again
Sounds like the fuel injector circuitry could be acting up. Take a look at the connections for the fuel injector harness. Also look for grounds in that harness. This could cause exactly what you are experiencing....Something else just occured to me. My uncle had a ford crown victoria that was doing what your truck is doing. We finally traced the problem to some leaves that had somehow gotten into his gas tank. While the car was running, the suction of the fuel would cause them tocover the fuel pickup in the tank. After the car was shut off, the leaves would settle off the pickup after a time. Then the car would run fine for a short time again.
