How can i know if my flywheel is going out? It's a '97 F250 5-speed. Someone suggested it but i just wanted to know how you guys can tell if one is going out. I know my symptoms but this isn't something i just want to throw a dart at a wall about!! Thanks for any help
My pedal pressure was so hard it would give your leg a workout, plus it made an annoying clicking sound. Got a single mass from south bend and it works great.
As stated above, a vibration and noise from the bell housing area. A big "THUNK" when you turn the truck off. Hard pedal, clutch engagement about 1" off the floor, lurching at certain speeds while the engine rpms are constant. These are several of the symptoms of a DMF going south. You may not have all of these. It depends on how the DMF is going bad, center bearing seperation & offset, broken spring or springs, etc.
put it in fifth, let off the clutch like you were in first, if it stalls replace it. at least thats how they taught us in diesel skool
Umm... so just try to burn my clutch? I don't get it. Try to take off normally but in fifth? I'll try. My symptoms are a shuddering in the shifter when i push in the clutch sometimes along with a annoyying noise when it does it, clatter/chatter noise is the best way i can describe it. it will do it most when im doing slow manuvers under load, like manuvering in a parking lot. Also it does a good clunk when i shut her down. I kinda think my clutch might be going anyway because sometimes shifting it when wide open it seems to slip a little bit. I would like to take care of this problem before i lift it so i know everythings good. Thanks for the help!
My clutch is doing something funky also but it doesnt make a clunk or anything its more of a hissing noise when i let out on the clutch in gear or out. any answers for me? also what would be the best clutch to replace it with i will need something more heavy duty than stock of course but dont want to go over board. thanks
Hello mklemin. New user Highboy-upgrade here. Have used the wisdom from this site for some repairs and it worked out for me. I also have the hissing sound with clutch engaged but have not figured it out yet. it is quite when pedal is to the floor. I have no slipping or no tob noise. Just wondering if you have got a solution yet. Your input would be greatly appreciated thanks Bryan
The DMF is a 40 piece bearing/clutch/spring setup.
You know. I really should count the parts before I keep saying 40 piece.
Anyways, there are 20+ pieces to it.
I wish I had my article finished for you to learn more, but this one will take a few days writing.
Anyways.
The DMF gets slop in it. The smack sound people are talking about is the clutch actually moving on the bearing inside and the clutches are wore out so its not keeping things tight anymore, as well as the springs being worn out.
Biggest tell tale signs are vibrations, odd noises and i'm sure there is a whole other list.
Get under the truck and take off the cover. have somebody push in the clutch. grab the part closest to the clutch, the part without the teeth on it, and see if you can turn it back and fourth.
Please block the tires!

haha
If you can move the DMF, then its bad
I believe I have a picture in my DMF for Dummies thread showing how the flywheel turns.
