I put some junk 360 I got for free in my bronco as a temporary motor, it had a points distributor as it should, but I had another FE dizzy that I pulled apart, and put duraspark guts in instead of the points. I put it in the 360 and it made a world of difference. It ran much smoother, and much more responsive. When it is cold it's MUCH easier to drive too. My problem is that after running it for like 20 minutes down the road, it goes through these spells where the ignition will shut off for a quick second, then work for a couple seconds, then shut off again and so on. it will do this for miles. Then I pull over and shut'er down, turn everything off. I wait a minute or two and start back up, and continue down the raod and everything is fine....but only for another 5-8 miles or so then it does it again. It's like something in the duraspark module is heating up, and shorting out, or shuting off.
BTW, brand new coil(for the durasprk ignition, the points coil will not work w/ elec. ign), Brand new module, I have good constant power to my coil.....so I'm lost here, unless I just got a bad module????
Here are a few extra electrical checks.
Make sure the engine intake has a good ground. The ground cable for intake is located at rear of intake and is mounted to cab.
Make sure the distributor housing is grounding properly. New paint on distributor bracket can make for improper grounding.
Should my Bronco have a ballast resistor, or something? it originally came w/ the duraspark ignition, so I thought it would love it, but I never had this problem running points. I think because the points use less juice to operate. I cannot see any type of resistor in the circuit unless it is inside the truck, under the dash. Nothing is painted on this motor.....it was a free junk motor....if it blew up tomorrow I wouldn't be sad one bit.
D7AZ-12250-A .. Resistor Wire~Coil to Ignition (Motorcraft DY-213) 49"-length color coded red with green stripes. All vehicles from this vintage have one.
where does the other end of the wire go to? the end that's NOT on the coil.
I'm not using the factory wiring, because I changed it to run points for the past couple years. so this time it's like I changed a points vehicle like an older one, and converted it to duraspark. The 2-wire plug from the wirewall for the module was never touched, but I ran my own coil wire that goes to a switch, so I could have the key on, and not burn out my points if I ever needed to.
I want to say that the wire I used to go to the switch, is the original coil wire.
So if I were to ditch the resistor wire, would that mess up the coil? Also I have always been under the impression that a points coil uses less volts than the electronic ign. one, but I never had problems w/ the points at all??
