I can lower my rear window with the dashboard switch, but there seems to be a short when I attempt to raise it, so I have to use the key in the back to do so.
Is there a replacement for the switch on the dash, or do I have to rig another toggle elsewhere?
I have had switch problems for several years. I bought the new replacement for the dash fromthe dealer and it lasted about a year or less. It has lousy contacts in it. That is probably what is causing your problem. I have also had the tailgate key control not work but the dash switch work and when I finally got it all to work it turned out the problem was in the dash switch. After five years of wrestling with it I finally went to the auto store and bought one of the 6 dollar chrome window switches and fit it into the dash hole. It has worked perfectly since both front and back.
Good luck
I had trouble with the dash switch once, the only way too raise it was with the key on the tail gate. Turned out to be a pinched wire where the wire's come out of the body to the tailgate. Just a suggestion. Good Luck, and have a happy new year. Rob
OK, I bought a momentary toggle switch from the hardware store, but haven't installed it yet. I noticed that on the original switch there is a ground wire. Do I need to ground the switch or can I just omit that wire from the new switch?
don't know if you solved your problem yet all you should need to do is remove the switch take the back cover off and clean the contacts just like we used to do with points. use fine sand paper and electrical contact cleaner.
OK, I took out the switch from the dashboard. I cleaned it, and it works, but I do see that I need to replace it since it is pretty burned up. I'll save for the $40 replacement.
I was bored today so I decided to fix my rear window dashboard switch. The hardest part was getting that connector apart! It says "push" on it, whatever they mean by that. Anyway, my contacts all looked very clean, although I touched them up with a nail file. The problem was that the brass part that pushes down when the plastic switch pushes it was pushed down a lttle too far. In other words, the plastic switch wasn't pushing the brass far enough to make the contacts touch. This explained why the switch would sometimes work if I pressed it real hard. I simply bent the brass up, just a little, and now my switch works great. You can check yours by making the contacts touch while you have the switch cover off and the ignition key on. If the window goes up and down with no problems, then you know it is simply a matter of making sure that the plastic switch is pushing them far enough to make a good contact.
Exactly how do you get the switch out of the whole control panel assembly? there seem to be 4 plastic tabs that have been melted to to the panel. should i drill these out and replace them with screws or what?? your help is appreciated.
Those 4 tabs appear to be "melted" on the panel, but on mine the trim plate just popped right off and went back on w/ no problem. The switch is riveted to the unit, so I had to drill out the rivets to remove it. Since I don't have a rivet gun, I used some short metal screws to re-fasten the switch to the unit.
