I have a strange noise coming from my tranny. I recently replaced a leaking pan gasket and decided to change oil at the same time. I just bought this truck and have noticed that it is lot louder than normal. After I changed the oil and started the truck up again the noise was gone until I added a few more liters of oil and then it returned. The noise is almost a ringing sound, very metalically. There wasn't any filings in the pan when I took it off. Could this be a torque converter problem? Has anyone else had to deal with this before? There is about 200,000 miles on the truck but they haven't been hard miles at all. Any help would be nice.
yeah, it is a 7.3 and a 4r100. that is exactly the sound. it will go away as soon as i rev the engine above 1500 rpm without the tranny in gear. samr when i accelerate.
Does it seem to go away when the torque converter locks up; over 40 mph or so? If it does, chances are its fine. Ford used 2 different TC's in '99. One was noisier than the other, but supposed to be stronger. My truck sounds like hell at idle, but quiets down when the TC locks up.
that is good info. I was ready to pull the tranny and replace the TC so maybe I will wait. The truck has always been that way I just thought that maybe there was a fix for it now that wasn't available before. It is very annoying because everyone stares as you drive around town, but on the highway it's fine.
Thanks
