'95, 4.9, 95amp alternator. The upper bolt loosened easily, but I've stripped the head of the lower bolt that runs all the way through the alternator and threads into the back side. It pivots easily on the bolt, leading me to believe the bolt has corroded inside the alternator through hole.
Hence, I'm doubtful grinding the head off of the bolt and threading it out the back side will work, because the bolt still wouldn't spin relative to the alternator.
Any ideas how to remove it? I'm soaking it know with PB-40.
You may be able to get that bolt out by heating the block (not red hot) and then try to turn the head of the bolt, maybe vice grips.
Get a good penetrating oil like P B Blaster and soak it down good too.
I looked at removing the whole bracket with the alternator attached. There is one stud connecting the bracket to the block that can't be accessed unless the alternator is removed.
Using a 3 foot cheater bar is how I stripped the bolt head in the first place.
I'm soaking it now with PB blaster. I'll try heating it. I'm going to get a set of the special sockets that are supposed to work on stripped bolt heads.
Make sure you throw no some anti sieze when you reinstall!
Use some vice grips and a little bit of heat.
the other thing you can do is cut the head of the bolt off and see if you can slide it out enough to cut the other end so it pulls off, then use vice grips closer to the threads.
You loose a lot of torque on the bolt when you are 3 or 4 inches away, its like useing a ratchet extension.
