No troubleshooting codes for ABS

My ABS light came and the dollar signs appeared. I tried to retrieve the troubleshooting codes, (used haynes manual), by grounding the black/orange wire with the key switch on (and off).....nothing. this leads me to believe the RABS module is bad. Any help here would be grateful.....

91 Bronco, 302

P.S. Would an ABS failure effect my 4x4? it suddenly doesn't work either. I know from the wiring diagram that they appear to interrelated.

No troubleshooting codes for ABS

First off, do you have 4WABS or RABS? The Bronco was the only Ford truck to receive 4WABS for the pre-'97 years, or so I am told. If you have 4WABS, you have to jumper 2 pins in the diagnostic connector. If you have RABS, you have to make sure to locate the correct pigtail, and then ground it. Then turn on the key and the ABS light should flash the codes.

When you turn the ignition key on (prior to driving, not diagnosing), does the ABS light illuminate brefly, then shut off, then re-illuminate to indicate a fault, or does the ABS light just illuminate and stay on? If it is staying on, then I would suspect a RABS module. If it illuminates after a few seconds, then I would suspect another problem. I would have to dig through the books to locate more information to solve your problem.

I have RABS, rear antilock only. The abs light comes on (and stays on) a few seconds after the brake light comes on. If it means anything, they both stay on.

No matter how I try and ground the single black/orange wire, the codes will not flash. The light just stays on.

I noticed this morning after a drastic deceleration, that I do not appear to have any rear brakes at all. I am led to believe that the module is either or bad, or getting no power. I will have to rip out the glove box sometime soon to investigate this.

Would this effect the 4x4 on my truck as well?

RABS not working should not affect the normal operation of the braking system at all. If you have no rear brakes at all, I would first check into that. They should be working, whether the RABS is working properly or not at all. The light is powered by the module, so if it wasn't getting power, the light would not come on at all. Also, if the brake light comes on, then the RABS will be disabled and the ABS light will come on. I would check for the brake problem first.

If you have a problem with the control valve under the drivers side frame rail it can cause the abs and the brake light to stay on.In my case the valve has failed it will not close off the brake fluid pressure to the rear wheels if directed to do so by the rabs module. So Basically I don't have rear antilock,But my brakes work fine. Now,if the module failed in the "dump mode" where it bleeds of the pressure to the rear brakes back to the master cylinder, then you would'nt have any rear brake. However it would have to be stuck in this mode or have a short, because I believe the valve is designed to fail open so you don't lose rear brake pressure.
