Anyone have any other ideas on what would cause the steering wheel to turn on it's own when a vehicle is started??
I am putting a mid 80's Chevy gear box into my 58 f-100 and have had the gear box rebuilt and gears reversed to accomidate the new mounting location on the truck (allows the pitman arm to swing correctly). Anyway, when I first tried to install the hoses (custom made) there was no power to the steering. I was told I had them on wrong so I switched them. That's when the wheel started moving at start up. Moves faster as the R's go up to the point of being very dangerous. Anyone have idea's or suggestions?
Sounds as if you should've put in either the T*&%#a 4x4 P/S package (mounts in the same place as the original manual steering system w/ adding a knuckle u-joint) or an original FoMoCo Ram Assist P/S package (bolts right in inplace of the manual system) to me, as I heard nothing but those kind of problems w/ this particular package you've installed.
Sounds like trash in the control valve. I haven't had a vehicle do this, but I work on heavy equipment and see this problem occasionally. Try turning the wheel all the way against the stop and then revving the engine, then turn to the other stop and do the same, might flush out what has the valve sticking.
