From what I have been told, the block heater causes problems when it was used. What it reportedly did was cause the block to crack only when used, so if he never used it, then there should be no problems.

The truck is a westcoast truck so the blockheater was never used so it should be ok. I guess the first thing to do would be to cut the plug off so it does not get accidentally plugged in.
I have owned a 1984 F-250 with 6.9L since May 1994. The original engine was otherwise very good, but had to be replaced in December 1996 due to cracked block behind the starter, by the block heater. This has also been a west coast truck all it's life. I bought the replacement engine from IH, and to my amazement, they gave me $1075 core return credit for the cracked engine!
