99 explr 4 L sohc. from what ive read this engine has 4 timing chains...what is the timeing chain replacment interval? the vehicle has 140 k on it now.
I'm not much into the SOHC engine, but here's what I've read on the subject:
It's not the chains themselves that are the problem but rather the tensioners, and the front cam casette. As I understand it, the pre-2002 engines had a problem with the cassette. The tensioners have weak springs that are supposedly only good for about 75K miles. so that would be the closest to a change interval. Are you experiencing any problems, or just wondering how many miles (or kilometers) to expect out of your timing set?
i am getting some really loud rattling coming from the right front valve cover(at the front of the vavle cover/ I changed the oil and it helped a little ,and it seems to get a little better after the engine warms up.
I would really tend to suspect that tensioner then. The chains should (supposedly) last the life of the engine but the other components can become suspect.
There were a couple of recalls on the timing components, 01M01 and 00M12. Go here and scroll down to those numbers, it's possible that your vehicle falls under those recalls and they were never done. If that's the case, Ford may cover it.
