feul problem

my 71 dosnt like to start after its run 10miles or 50 miles.i lose the fuel in the filter(clear)i think its drainin back.then after it does start i can get about a 1/4mile down the road and bam it dies, emty filter again.sounds like vaper lock to me.well yesterday while sitin on the side of the road waitin for it to cool down i started pullin feul lines i took it off the carb and turned it over still nothing,ok took thie line off the pump(tank side) had feul not much but there was feul.next i took off the gas cap and blew into the tank a lil more run out then.what was weird when i pulled the tank line off the pump i heard like a vacum/air preaser sound.if i let it sit 15min itll crank and go on till i stop again and itll do it all over.any ideas?oh i checked the screen in the tank to it ok.mabe a colaping line?

well thats what i thought also, but when i got home i checked the pump by runnin a ruber line to a gas jug and startin the truck my presher gauge read 8 lbs so it cant be the pump.when it did it i pulled the tank line off the pump and heard a hissing noise line suction or air. i think ill try a new line to tank today and see what happens

On the pickup tube in the gas tank is a filter screen. The filter just slides on the end of the tube. You have to remove the fuel sender to gain access to the innards of the gas tank, while there, replace the fuel sender float.

Also, you may have a fuel filter mounted to the fuel pump. Does your pump have what resembles a tomato can on top (or bottom) with serrated edges? If so, there 's a filter inside. Most ppl don't know about this filter, so it never gets changed. The filter can unscrews, take care...it may be stuck.

C4AZ-9365-A .. Fuel Filter-in Pump (Motorcraft FG-1)

D1AZ-9A011-A .. Fuel Pickup Tube Screen

C1AF-9276-A .. Fuel Sender Gasket

C0AZ-9202-A .. Fuel Sender Float

The items are available from Ford, or some parts houses. There are two sizes of screens, you need the larger of the two.

There could be just a little piece of rust or dirt floating around the very bottom of the pickup tube going into the fuel tank (I'm assuming its behind the seat). I had a similar problem with my 65 F350 and ended up having to put a new tank in because it was beyond cleanability. You woudl be suprised what can stop the fuel flow. Its a pain in the neck but pulling the tank and checking really carefully with a flashlight and rinsing it our could be very helpful.
Just a thought

That probably means you have some crud floating around in the tank that's plugging up the pickup tube. I had the same problem. First it was rust and then it was the rotted brass pickup float. What was left of the float sat right under the pickup tube and it would get sucked right up and plug the flow.

im thinking that the air blew the screen off the end of the tube(hopefuly it did) then i just put a new inline filer just before the feul pump that way all the crud will getsucked into there and i can just change it and throw the crud away

Unless it's a big chunk of something. But with your set up you'll find out soon enough. Take a flashlight and look down in the tank when it's empty. Mine had an 8 inch band of rust on the bottom and it filled and plugged my fuel pump filter almost completely full twice. I finally went out to a junk yard and found a good one with no rust.

I hope very much that its just a small thing, but chances are its a flake of rust thats too big to go through the pickup tube. If there is a junkyard around and they happen to have trucks this old, get a good tank now. A new one will run ya well over 200 bucks, which is no fun at all. I wish you good luck.

I like your Farmall comment as I too have a Farmall H and a 454. I had a 450 for a few years til I sold it to my neighbor.
