question about xlt vs. stx

i am aware that xlt has a digital reading for outside temperature and compass. my stx has the same display but minus the temp and compass. how would i get these features added to my truck? is it as simple as buying a module i plug in outside my truck and now i have this or what? help, please.

I don't believe the STX cluster is capable of showing that data even if you had the modules for temp and compass.
I've been reading about instrument cluster swaps lately.Several people have put FX4 and Lariat clusters in XLTs and STXs.It's not a cheap mod.Not only do you have the cost of the cluster, you have to bring the cluster to the dealer to get the as-built data from your truck programmed to the new cluster, for another $100 or more.If you don't get it programmed A/C and 4x4 and some other functions that run through the cluster won't work.
The Roush cluster I had my eye on on ebay sold oh well I wasn't looking foward to doing that mod anyway.
You could probably find a XLT cluster pretty cheap. That way you would have a tach and with the right modules you may get the temp and compass to work.

Unfortunately the STX is a slightly modded XL. Much of the wiring for the added features for power group and other XLT options is deleted from your wiring harness. Some items are enabled via the CAN network and those items require the twisted pair to each component. Then enabling as stated before requires as built data to enable those features and the vehicle ID data I believe has to match. So you could get an XLT cluster but it would not work all the features because your as built data does not match and your CAN network is not wired as completely as XLT nor are the sensor wires and some components of the Smart Junction block are deleted.

To make an XL or STX bare bones cheap, you get the cheap wiring harness and bare essentials.

I just installed an AM/FM/CD/MP3 radio into my XL from an Explorer. All works fine except the button back lighting. That is because on the Explorer that feature is CAN network enabled and there is no wiring for the CAN network to the radio in my truck. So I get MP3 CD player function, and all the goodies I wanted, but I wont get to see the buttons in the dark. A compromise for sure but it beats AM/FM only. I also installed a factory subwoofer and had to wire it all in with my own wiring.

Ya know from what i have read, and i might be wrong but people have taken out their old clusters and have put in a lariat cluster and then outside temp showed up without having to buy or add anything to the truck... Although i guess the stx's being really cheap prolly are missing the component required for this. I could get your a thermometer if that's help you out though.

Im thinking of just getting one of those auto dimming rear view mirrors with the compass and temp readouts in it. It would be a heck of a lot easier to install.

but the thing is i have the power group in my truck. that's why i'm so curious at to if i might be able to just buy a module i plug in my truck somewhere. and i'm pretty sure i have the xlt cluster already. not the xl/stx cluster.

it's on my window sticker, and my truck did come with power locks and windows, cruise, cd w/mp3, fog lights. so homer, there is a difference between the xl/stx gauge cluster and xlt cluster and up right? i believe i have the upgraded cluster. just no temp/compass for my display. i'd rather have it in my display, rather buying the auto rearview mirror with temp/compass display.
