Hello All,
I have a 1998 Explorer Limited.
The headlights come on at night automatically. I like this, but it makes me lazy.
I can't use the lights while boarding Ferry boats - it blinds the crews on the boat and on the dock.
How do I turn them off or switch them to just the running lights?
I can't find anything on this in the manual.
I believe it the same as the '96 . there is a on/off switch (button) and also a slide button which controls the amount of time the headlights remain on after you turn the car off. These are located on the rear view mirrow.
Same on the '98. There is a slide on the bottom of the rear view mirror. Slide it all the way to the left and you will have manual lights. The slide adjusts the time the lights stay on after you turn off the engine. There is also an indicator light up there that comes on to indicate that the system has turned on the lights.
While we're on the subject...I have an 87 that the headlight wont work.
The high beams will come on if you pull on the momentary switch and the parking light will work like they are supposed to.
Does anyone know if there are more that one fuse? If so, which ones are they?
Have there been alot of switch failures on these trucks?
I do not have a shop manual or an owners manual for this truck.

No fuses on this one. The fuse link is wired to the headlight switch on the dash which is wired to the dimmer switch, which is wired to the low & high filaments of the headlights.
Only 2 things this could be. Bad dimmer switch, or the low beam filament in each headlight could be burned out..
If the low beams quit working at the same time, replace the dimmer switch.
