the other night I was driving my truck and the darn headlights just went out.
I was puzzled and pulled over, got out and tapped the headlights,no good.
I soon discovered that if I toggled the high beam stalk the light came on.
Every time I used the turn signal and rounded a corner/turn, the stalk would click and the lights would go out and I would have to just lightly touch it to get the headlights to come on.
I am assuming the high beam/turn signal/wiper stalk/switch is faulty.
Considering I have 110K miles, I would imagin the contacts are worn or broken.
Dad always said to check the simple things before your start tearin' into something.
I'd try shooting some compressed air into the 'hole' in the column before I try anthing else. It could be dust/dirt on a contact and you may be able to fix it with air.
You could try the air thing first to try and save a few bucks. If that doesnt work, just replace the multifunction switch, they commonly fail. If I remember right they cost somewhere around 70 bucks. It's easy to replace, you just have to split the column housing open, its like 4 screws and then like 2 screws to take the switch out.
On my 2002 Expedition, the multi-conductor connector inside the steering column housing came loose. Whenever I would tilt the steering wheel, various surprise things would occur- stuff you wouldn't imagine like brake and turn signal failures. Open it up and zip tie that stuff together if it looks like it's not staying put.
Wires pulled from the connector inside of my column when I would tilt the wheel down all the way. It only required me to loosten the retaining bolt, and give it a little slack. All the lights and turn signals worked fine after that, and I got my tilt wheel back.
I really appreciate all the great help
I am going to open it up in the next few days and inspect the wires and connector and make sure nothing is chaffing or broken.
I had the same problem. Pulled it out and opened it up. The contacts on the inside are like little copper plates and had turned green with a film. Cleaned them all nice & shiney and have not had a problem since.
