I have an '05-last fall I had a local exhaust shop remove my cat and muffler and put in a straigth pipe. I love the sound and the fact that nothing is restricting my engine. Today, I took my truck to the dealer where I bought it for a tranny flush and inspection(I live in PA) They told me that it will not pass inspection cause it has no muffler. I am wondering... do I go to the trouble to put everything back on then take it off and deal with this again next yr, put it back on and leave it on, or break out the guts of the cat and muffler and then put it back on? I hate to break out the guts just in case we do end up with emissions testing on diesel pickups here. Any thoughts???
By the way, the thing that really ticks me off is that before I did this I asked the service man if removing the cat and muffler would cause any problems-he claimed he did not know and told me to call ford-which in turn also told me they did not know. I had to call another local ford dealer and talk to their diesel tech who told me not to worry about anything.
I need to make a quick decision cause the inspection runs out Sunday.

Strictly IMO... It'll fail the visual inspection, but may still pass the sniffer... Catch 22. Make ready for anything, so you covered no matter what. I'm on the lookout for a boneyard CAT that I can gut. If push-comes-to-shove, I'll still have a CAT w/guts in the garage...
I find it hard to believe that all those people did know that was a violation of federal emmissions laws...my fried in So. Cal was mailed a notice to take his '03 diesel in for a smog inspection...I don't know all the details but it was for that exact reason, fortuatley he was all stock....as for your question I think you answered the part about gutting the parts yourself...I think if you really enjoy it that much I would replace the factory parts assuming you still have them or go back to your shop where you had it done and say "hey...put these back on, I'm about to get sent to the big house for not having them...or the poor house."
I don't think the muffler is a legal requirement but the cat is.
You might try a cat delete pipe that would give you the
options to replace the cat whenever you needed.
The Walker BTM is highly recommended on the 7.3 side
because it's straight thru offers some help with drone.
Do you have any drone issues with the straight pipe now?
Thanks for the advise. I was able to find a guy to inspect it-it took four shops til I found one to do it.
hott-rodd asked about drone issues-I love the whistle but when I really get on it, it makes a weird sound, almost sounds like my old 5.4 with a flowmaster. It sure is loud but not too loud in the cab. If I had to do it all over again I would have just bought the cat and muffler delete pipes. Live and learn.
