Yesterday ,weather finally got a bit of warmth in it all ice has gone & I decided to fit the used CMP synchroniser unit I bought about 2 months ago. I used this Forum as research & was fairly confident that I had enough tips & knowledge to get the desired result. What had happened is that the MIL was on , with the code P0340 (camshaft sensor circuit error) I bought a scan tool to verify this also an engine anylazer program . I had previously had a peak at the synchroniser unit & seen that the Hall effect sensor & vane had completely disintegrated. The engine still ran O.K. but the darn light was driving me nuts.... I went to the scrap yard & got a replacement unit off a 97, which was in excellent shape.
I went in through the doghose (about the only place you can access this component). I marked the old unit & carefully noted the positions of the drive casing & the remains of the synchroniser vane. These are the two critical positions which govern the timing of the sequential fuel injection system. There is also a Ford installation tool which fixes the vane position to the synchro body at the correct angle so all you have to do is plug it into the pinion gear at 75* with Piston 1 @ TDC on compression & push the unit down till the clamping face is mated to the block surface & Viola!!!! tighten the clamp bolt & job is almost done.
Anyhow the engine started nice & smooth & I connected up the scantool & erased the DTC (p0340). The engine light went out & I'm happy to say after several test drives & a trip to work & back it's still out!!
I now have an exhaust growling at me!!!!!!!
Oh well at least it cant throw an MIL at me?
ALL the best, Aeroman
