Today I took my truck to the dealer to have the ball joints checked out. They did what I asked, but upon returning home I noticed that they also changed my oil. They replaced my Mobil 1 M1-210 filter with a Valvoline filter and replaced my Mobil 1 5w-30 with whatever bulk #@$%! they are using this month! Another strange thing is that I have a Fram Suredrain, that should have given some indication that I change the oil myself. I'll be getting a call from the service manager tomorrow - whatever. I'm due for a change in 100 miles, so I guess it's not that big of a deal. Should I just look at this as a free flush and change on schedule, or should I actually due some kind of flush (which I didn't do when I switched to synthetic in the first place). I guess I just answered my own question, I'm just annoyed.
I concur. They should tell you to go and get the correct Mobil 1 and oil filter you were using previous. Change it for you, or if you want to do it yourself, reimburse you for the total amount on your receipt, for the Mobil 1 and oil filter. Throw in a free chassis lube.
Why they changed your oil, without it on a work order, is a mystery.
That would be the correct thing to do.
Let us know what happens.

Reason: Misspelled Word
So you got a free oil change within 100 miles of when you where going to change it anyway?
So whats the deal? If you had just changed your oil and they replaced it with their lower quality stuff... sure, get mad. But like you said, this is a free engine flush.

I agree. If you needed an oil change and the oil and filter meets specs for your vehicle, why argue . They did something nice for you by changing the oil. Granted it might not be M1, but after you reach the "normal oil" change frequency put M1 back in.
You're right, "no harm, no foul", but this whole experience has been a pain in the butt. I spoke at length with the service manager about what I wanted done. When I made the appointment I told the adviser what i wanted done, and suggested that he discuss it with the service manager, he said "fine drop it off anytime". I went to the lot at 9:30 pm to use the "night owl" box, but the parking lot was chained off, thank goodness for 4 wheel drive. At 1:00 pm today they called and said they need more information (read hadn't even started yet), so I make the request a third time, wait the rest of the day, and come home to discover this. I called the folks at Mobil 1 and they are sending me a decal package (for use under the hood) for both vehicles, so hopefully this won't happen again. In case any other Mobil 1 users are interested in the decals, call 1-800-662-4525 option 1 and they'll hook you up. The package is free.
A couple of years back my sister took her car in for something (not an oil change) at a local tire shop. She specifically told them she had synthetic oil (Amsoil) in the car and not to screw with it. Her car had a decal under the hood and a little flag like sticker on the dipstick saying to not add or change without permission.
She went back to get it and they told her they top'd off her oil as she was a qt low.
She said BS and took the manager out to check it, he checked it and sure enough it was a qt over.
That would make me furious, and is one reason I don't let shops or dealers touch my cars/truck unless they absolutely need to. One thing for others to understand is that once a motor has synthetic oil it in it's not a good idea to switch back to dino. I'm not sure of the specifics, but I would think the difference in chemical composition would not let the oils mix well and could gum or sludge the motor up.
Synthetic is kind of a religious issue with many of us so I can see the irritation of having your Mobil 1 engine polluted with dino leavings.
But look at it as a free flush. The dino won't hurt anything and if you change to Mobil 1 either right away or even later, no real harm done other than religious faithfulness.
Maybe see if you can find a tape tag for the dip stick that says Mobil 1 ONLY or even an oil fill cap that says the same. I have seen the tape tags occasionally, I bet if you call Mobil 1 they would send you some. An some models or brands of car use Mobil 1 only and have oil caps that say so. I know this is true for many chebbies.
BTW, oils meeting the same specification by industry agreement must be compatible so mixing them is not a serious issue. Going back and forth isn't a problem This used to be a problem 20 years ago but not for a long time. Most people do not recommend switching back and forth but you won't suffer except for doing penance.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson

If you needed a change anyway and they did not charge leave it for a short 3K run and then do the change yopurself and look at this as a free 'flush" dino will not case any harm or compatibility issues with M1 mor any otjher syn.
