interchangable headers on a 351M/C/W

hey im wondering if headers or manifolds for a 351 cleveland can be interchanged with a 351 windsor or modified, and visa versa. are there any differences in either the block or the header shape themselves that will prevent me from swapping? the headers im trying to get fit a 351 cleveland out of a mustang fastback. a buddy of mine has a set laying around and thats why im asking. i wanna know if theyll fit before i take everything apart and they dont line up.

No No and No. Actually the 351C and 351M MAY bolt up to the head as long as they are both 2V heads but since the deck height is different the pipes will not fit around the starter, frame, linkages, etc.

Actually, depending on the application, you can use 351C 2V headers on a 351M/400. You will have to do a little fab work on the exhaust but those can work. Granted, on some apps, you will have interference. I'm running 351C 4V headers on my 400. It is in a car that was never intended to have a 400 but the stuff worked. The bigger issue he may have is trying to use Mustang headers in a different car/truck.

Fab work and bolting up, fitting, or lining up aren't the same thing. I believe I mentioned the 2V bolt up that may not work tho due to interference.

By fab work I mean simple muffler shop work that you would need to do to replace manifolds with headers. My Clevo headers on my 400 fit but I did need to fab up an exhaust system......unless I wanted to headers with a set of collector glass packs. I have never seen a long tube header that directly swapped inplace of a cast iron manifold that did not need some exhaust work. I wasn't trying to poke holes its just that you can get away with swapping headers within the 335 family, you just need to do some trial fitting. And yes, I think a 4x4 app will be the hardest app to slip in something that was not specifically made for it. If he has a Ranchero with a C and he is swapping in a M/400, then he should give it a try, only problem may be that he gets a warm foot where the collector is closer to the floor pan.

On my 79 2WD with the 351C I tried 2WD 351M headers and they hung down way too low to work.A set of Must Clev. headers would have worked without the x member between the radius arm mounts. They would have worked with a fabbed xmember wich wouldn't have been hard to do but I was building a driver so I used manifolds.A friend of mine has a 351W in a 73 2WD with Must. headers and just left the x member off.He just cruises to shows so it's OK I guess but I wouldn't want to use one a lot like that.
