Hey, before I got my 77 F150, I was starting on a 70 Camaro, and someone clued me in to call Chevrolet, give them the VIN, and ask for a "restoration pak". I did, and they sent me, FREE, a packet about 3/4 inch thick, that gave virtually every technical specification on those cars you could ever ask for. There was some info specific to that actual car, and then a lot of general stuff on the engines, trannies, rear ends, interiors, colors, etc. When I sold the Camaro, the kid who bought it was as excited about all that information as he was the car itself.
Does anyone know if Ford offers anything similar on these old trucks? You know they have to have archived information, it's just do they release it to the public, and to restorers?
No, I called the toll-free number myself, and spoke to Chevrolet directly, and about two weeks later, this packet came in a manila envelope. Direct from GM. Nicest thing they ever did for me, and it was a wealth of information.
I'd love to except I let it go when I sold the Camaro. I got the phone number and the idea from a website I found dedicated to Camaro rebuilders called www.nastyz28.com. It was so much I put it in a ring-binder notebook. It wasn't bound like a book, it was just photocopied pages they rubber-banded together.
Ok...do I buy parts, or books...now I have a dilemna.
Welcome to FTE
You can post all the numbers from your Rating (VIN) Plate right here on FTE..you can decode it yourself, or one of us can do it for you. This will give specific info on your truck: Where it was built, where it was ordered from, what engine type, transmission type, rear end type and ratio, interior color and type of fabrics used. Original paint color..etc.
While I don't know of any specific book that will tell you all about your 1978. There is one book available from krause.com that will list all the specs on your 1978, also what the options and different models were. The book covers all Ford light commercial vehicles (F Series, Bronco, Ranchero, etc) from 1905 to 2002.
