I'm in the market for a used F-250 Crew with the Powerstroke. I obviously want one at the lowest possible price but is there a rule of thumb for extras, i.e. lift, chip, custom wheels? I'm checking the blue book, NADA etc which include some of these options but not all. I'm willing to make a fair offer but I'm not going to pay dollar for dollar more for these options. Any thoughts?
any truck is worth only what someone is willing to pay for it. if you don't want all the extra bells & whistles, don't look at trucks that have them. however if you want the extras or do plan on installing these options later on, factor in how much it would cost you to have it done and subtract that from the asking price. then you'll be at the "real price" of the truck and not the price w/ all the extras added in.
This is to vague of a question. Without knowing the year, mileage and info on a particular truck, there is no way to tell you what might be considered a fair price. My advice is to find yourself a truck or trucks that you are interested in and post some info on them including the asking price. There are many here that will get back to you quickly with opinions and advise.
Sorry for the vagueness. I'm looking at a 2000 F-250 Lariat, Crew cb shortbed, 7.3L white w/ tan leather. All the interior options plus upgraded stereo. 6"lift, 35"BFGs (90% tread left) electric swingout running boards, upgraded headlights, spray in bed liner and aux fuel tank. Super clean in and out, 2nd owner, weekend truck, 48k miles. Asking $23000? Kelly Blue book has it between $19000 and 21.5 (good to excellent condition private party trade). NADA booked at 21.4 trade-in, $24.3 retail. Other than the bigtime stereo which I do't care about, it has all of the options I'm looking for except for probably gauges and chip.
This truck has got alot of extra's in it and nothing for mileage on a '00, it's barely broken in yet. If it is in excellent condition it is probably worth what he's asking or close too it. A low mileage 7.3 is getting hard to come by. Kelly does tend to price out a little high, but they also dont take into account the lift kit and most of your other options there. It couldnt hurt to try and negotiate the price down a bit, How much negotiating room depends on whether you are dealing with a private owner or a dealer.
From a dealer perspective I find at wholesale auctions that mods turn off some dealers if they dont understand it. As a rule I would say aftermarket mods that are well done and in good condition increase a trucks value no more than 50% of the original cost of the mods. Poorly installed or damaged accessories do not add any value at all. Anything modified should be looked at thoroughly and try to attain the original manuals etc for any modifications and warranty. If it is a dealer ask them to contact the original owner for that stuff. As a rule we try to buy modified vehicles at auction and price them as unmodified plus 50% of the value of good quality mods. But that doesn't neccessarily mean we had to pay that much
That's great info. Just what I was looking for. It is a private party sale and we live about 2 hours apart. He's agreed to meet halfway so I want to have a good idea, offer wise, so as not to waste either of our time. Thanks again for the info.
What I like to do is find there true selling price. Make him a low offer and see what he comes back with.....that will probably be his bottom or close to it. But before you make an offer, ask him how long it has been for sale and why he is selling it. If it has been for sale a while, he will be more inclined to negotiate. When buying a used vehicle from an individual, I am sizing up the seller just as much as I am sizing up the truck.
Good luck,
Jack

Well, it turns out, the truck is a V10.(nothing against V10 guys). The ad didn't mention and I didn't double check my notes from talking to the guy. So the search continues. Thanks for the responses.

Glad you found out before traveling an hour to see. OBTW: That truck is WAY...did I say, WAY out of price range for a 2000 V10. The person selling that SD...is NUTS!
