Big time rear axle problems
Big time rear axle problems
I recently bought a fullsize 1985 Bronco which seemed to be in great shape for the price. I only paid $1800 for it and it seemed to be VERY strong. The only problem is that, after only owning it for about 6 months or so, the rear passenger side axle broke at the hub (ie. the tire and hub seperated itself from the axle). This led to my backend of the Bronco hitting road pretty hard and and an odd expression on my face as I watched my wheel go rolling down the road. Luckily, I was stopping to turn into my apartment parking lot and not going very fast, so there was nothing really hurt except for my pride. The question that I have now is how to get the axle shaft out. There's definitely not enough of the shaft sticking out to be able to pull it out. And, I have the Ford 9" removeable carrier rear-end without the removeable inspection plate in the back of the rearend. In order to get the carrier off of the front of the rear-end to get to the axle from the inside, I have decided that I would basically have to drop the rear-end off of the truck to get to all of the bolts holding the carrier on, then hammer away at the axle to get it out. Does anyone have ANY suggestions for being able to get the axle out of the housing without having to take the carrier off (thus saving me a ton of hours and work)? I thought about trying to get something that I could attach, somehow, to the part of the axle that is visible to be able to pull it out, but I'm not sure what I would use or how to attach it. Please HELP!! Please either reply or email me with any suggestions!

I will presume you have a slide hammer puller. Weld a bolt onto the visiable part of the axle ,with a thread that matches the adapter of the slide hammer, bolt head side against the stuck axle shaft. Thread on the puller and have at it.
