I have an 86 F-250 302EFI 4x4. I recently finished a frame off resto and I have been having problems with vibration noises latly and after checking it out it turns out the transfer case is bad.It happens to be that the tranny and transfer case are the only major parts I didnt change. It spins the front driveshaft when it is in 2H. It doesnt spin it as fast as it does when it is in 4H or 4L, but it still spins when it shouldn't be turning. Has anyone ever had this problem before, Can I rebuild it and fix the issue or do I need to get a whole new transfer case? It is either a New Process 203 or New process 208 I believe, I am going to look into that further, but any information is appreciated. Thank you
I would lift both front wheels off the ground, and while someone holds one tire, you turn the other, to make sure the driveshaft doesn't turn. I am thinking possibly you have a hub that is not working correctly?
If it does turn out to be the transfer case, you can buy one rebuilt from lots of different places. Even junkyards now sell re-manufactured transfer cases and such.
Or if you feel confident, you could rebuild it yourself. The rebuild kits are not very expensive, I bought the kit for my NP208 from Bronco Graveyard for $100, while I was at it I ordered a new chain ($87) for it as well. It was not difficult at all, just have a nice clean dry area to work and take your time. It sounds to me that you have a lockout hub that is hanging up somewhere between 4x2 and 4x4 position.
Hey everybody thanks for the input, the tag number is E4TA-7A-195CA. Above those numbers is the number 208F. So I am assuming it is the New Process 208. There are also numbers on the front of the transfer case and the rear, do you need those? I should be able to do the rebuild on my own. How was the quality of those parts? If I countinue to drive it like this until I recieve the parts, will it do any pernament damage? Thanks for the input.
