hey guys.
its almost time for me to get my cab blasted down to bare metal...
im looking for a place in saskatoon, who can you recomend?
and what methed should i use to make sure it doesnt warp the metal?
sand, bead, ect.
i'm looking to get my cab and doors, inside and out done.
what price range am i looking at also?
Where I used to work my boss charged 120 a hour for sand blasting, to do doors and cab I could probably do it in 1-1.5 hours depending on wha degree of a blast you're looking for.
The harder (sorry can't think of better word) you sandblast the metal, it will turn to more of a white colour.
For a truck restoration it is quite common to do a light blast, but many people do a "white" blast.
A light blast will knock off rust and take off any imperfects in the paint coat that is currently on the truck, it gives the metal a rough surface that primer/paint loves to bond to and will take off a few layers of the old grummy paint.
A white blast will do all that but much better, when a truck is white blasted it is down to the bare metal.
There was an excellent place in Sutherland for all types of good quality automotive sandblasting but unfortunately they closed down a couple of years ago. They used to charge $150 to do a complete on a 65 Mustang coupe underneath, inside and out.
Last fall I took some Bobcat rims to Bandit Blasting & Painting-71st St & Idylwyld Dr. 934-0008. They did a great job, the cost was $100 for 4 rims which wasn`t bad. I have no idea of the cost for a cab.
snowking..the white blast sounds like what i'm looking for.
will i have to worry about warpage?
but since you have been in the bisness what can you recomened for me?
as for a place to take it to, and a method?
If you take it to a place they know what to do. I don't have any expierence with who to take it to but every once in a while you see body parts blasted in Bandits lot. That blaster I ran for awhile you would never try to do body panels. I did the grille for my 1957 though.
If you find a machine to do it, just use a couple quick test pieces, see how much pressure is coming out.
Generally though for a body part and a high pressure blaster 100cfm and up hold the nozzle about 12inch. away.
The only pieces to be carful of warping is were it is flat and thin, like bottom half of doors and box sides. anything with a curve, reinforced ain't gonna warp unless you hold the nozzle ridicously close.
I have not had anything done yet. I contacted Bandits about blasting a box 2 years ago and they were charging 75.00 for a box. When I talked to them they seemed to know what they were doing. They said they use lower preesure and diffirent sands for sheet metal on vehicles to reduce any chance of warpage. I seen them blasting trucks in the yard during the summer months. usually truck frames.
Maybe talk to a powder coat place and they can help send you to a good reputable sand blaster.
The glass will have to be taken out sand blasts everywhere and would most likely cause dmage to any glass still in.
It would be easier to blast with doors out, I say tak'em out.
