Today my truck died as I was driving down the road and it would not start back up. It just died all of a sudden and when I tried to start it, it acted like it was not getting any fuel, so I though a bad fuel pump. I went back about 4 hrs later to tow it and it started back up and ran just fine. I drove it about a mile away to a buddies house and it ran fine. I was going to start it up and let it run for a bit to see what it would do, it started fine and ran for a few minutes and dies again. It sarted right back up and ran for 30 seconds and died again and now no start again. Now I think that it is somthing electrical? It tries to start, but does not just cranks. It acts like the time I put in my DP tuner chip with a bad connection but I unhooked the chip and still nothing. Any idea's?
Do you have a spare CPS? Does the tach move while you're trying to crank it? Sounds like a CPS to me. Can you hear the fuel pump running when you turn the key on?
CPS? What year is the truck if pre 02 and no tach movement during cranking suspect the CPS. Also when it died under way did the tach drop like you turned the key off?
It is a 99.5 and yes it was just like I turnd the key off all gauges dropped! Yes you can hear the fuel turn on when I turn the key on. As far as the tach moving when i try to start it I do not know I will try in the moring, the truck is an hour away from me now. Can I get the CPS at auto zone or some place like that? Were is the cps at?
Edit: most auto part store varieties give trouble. I got my spare from ebay for $60. Some have bought auto store variety and it worked. They may chime in. Tommorow is Sunday.
Anyone have any experience with a CPS from the local parts place. I cost more but I can not wait a week to get one in the mail, does anyone know were to buy and get overnighted?
The best bet would be an IH or Ford dealer. IH will run around $110, Ford will go for about $160 +/-. Either way, you will most likely have to wait until tomorrow.
There have been many posts about the auto parts CPS either being DOA or VERY short lived.
I did get lucky at Autozone once and the one they had for 130 was a FOMOCO part might want to just check them out. I have had problems with the Carquest aftermarket ones.
