Would someone comment or explain Cetane Boost? Diesel Kleen talks about cetane boost on their bottle...3 to 6 ##. I don't know what they mean...is 3 better than 6, what do I really need? Is this like octane in gasoline? There is a lot I don't know about these diesels so this may be a dumb question. Thanks.
I am not sure but Cetain #'s relate to the combustibility so the higher the Cetain the better for diesels especially during cold weather. Older Diesels like the 7.3L and 6.0L Can run on ULSD but Diesel kleen helps with lubricity since there is less sulfer in the new Diesel fuel(ULSD). I know when I started useing DK my truck ran smoother and gained some milage but not much maybe went up 1 mpg at the most, it started faster on cold mornings. I would recomend it if you have a diesel.
As far as needing Dk....I dont think you "need" it but its good insurance especially with the new ULSD.
Cetane is for diesel as Octane is for gasoline. Octane is the measurement of how hard the fuel is to combust. Which, in a gasoline engine prevents detonation. Since you cant have detonation on a direct-injected engine.... Cetane is the opposite, a higher number means the fuel ignites more easily than a lower number. This means better cold start-ability and improved performance. Most pumps have 40-45 cetane, i run double dosage of dieselkleen. Biodiesel (100) is about 50-55 cetane i believe, and requires NO additive. It is basically additive in itself.
Thanks for the reply. If I were to use the Diesel Kleen in the silver bottle, what would you recommend...ounces per gallon. I figure if I have put in fifty gallons it should take about 16 ounces. Does that sound about right? I know this is not the double dose bit just the average amount. Thanks
what i have figured out with the bottle i bought is that for one tank full on our trucks that we should put in 8 oz., not sure if this is right but thats what i am gonna roughly put in a tank.
