i have a 94 f-250 turbo diesel, im wondering which trucks i can get a steering box off of, mine only will turn to the left, just seemed to happen out of no where.
i found out some more info about the steering boxes i thought id share with everyone cause it can save alot of money! the steering boxes are the same on all ford suvs, and trucks, all the way down to a 83 2wd ford ranger, same part number and all. so broncos, bronco 2s, explorers, mazda pickups, navajos, they are all the same up to a F450, and one for a 2wd ranger is on average $100-150 cheaper than the diesel f-250s. just some info
umm, they're not all the same. They might be physically similar. But it's what inside that's different.
For instance. 2WD/4WD have different gear travel. The 4WD can't turn as far because of the leaf spring front end.
well you should tell every parts house, junk yard and les schwab in the country then. I have friends that work at schwabs and they looked alot of things up, and the part numbers all match. same at the parts stores and junk yards. i don't know i put one from a 83 2wd ranger in and it turns just the same, actually alot better.
Well, Every parts house, junk yard and Les Shwab just want to sell you a part. They don't give a chit if it's right. As long as it works.
Try this. Look up the part number for a Ford 5.0 Map sensor. The parts houses will give one number for about 100 applications. Then go down to the Ford dealer. They'll ask you for your VIN. That's because they're different, for different tuned trucks/cars.
I had that same problem put a reman box on less than 100$ ? with a decent warranty.
there is a spool valve that goes bad which i figured would go bad in a used box shortly also.
i dunno, i got one out of a 83 2wd ranger in there and it turns just as good, i got it for free so if it goes out oh well, i'll just get another free one to stick in there, but i know people who have the same set up and they have had no problems, guess its just luck of the draw
I took a 89 F-250 4x2 steering box and put it in my 1988 4x4 F-350 and it works no different from the original. I just put the original pitman arm back on the 89 box. The only thing this box does different in not feel like I am driving a water balloon. The original box had the old plow truck wanders even when I put the new steering linkage in. The travel stops are on the axle not controlled by the box. If that were the case 1 pot hole you would need it adjusted.
I took one off of an 83 4x2 and put it on a 95 4x4 running gear and it seems fine.
You can adjust some gear boxes and some you can't. I am not familure with these small gear boxes besides taking them off one truck and putting them on another. The big boxes on road tractors I am very familure with. I have put alot of seals in Sheppard boxes and TRW boxes. Taken alot of them apart to try to rebuild them but the problem is with those boxes it is cheaper to get a reman then fix them yourself because the parts are high. I can get a reman box for what I can get a sector shaft alone, alot of the time.
It seem like the boxes on Fords seem to do very well but the some others are bad. My wifes Jeep lost the box on it in no time. She does carry mail but it should have done better. It lost the bushing on the sector shaft and I could have made a bushing on the lathe for it but you can't seem to get parts for them either.

Guys have ground the stops down, put in a 2wd box, and the tires will turn untill they hit the leaf spring.
