I know it's not the question but... Have you considered a V10?
You're going to pay more up front for a diesel as well as higher maintenance. You plan on a life span of between 120 to 140K miles which is well within reason for a gasser and low miles for a diesel.
Now, if you just want a diesel that's great. But it doesn't sound, at least to me, that you really need one.

I use mine as a daily drive most the year. I have a fun car I drive on the nice days in the summer. Before this truck I had a 2000 F350 with the V10. The PSD is way better. It is just more fun to drive, sounds way better and gets better mileage. Resale should also be better. But there is more maintenace to do. So I would say, if you don't mind spending the extra money up front, and really want a diesel, then go for it.
Also the whole time I had the old truck, I always wished I had gone with the diesel.

Most of the "toys" we own, do we really "need" Them? No. But we buy them anyway becuase we want them. Buy what you want if you can afford it and to hell with everyones opinion!
My truck pulls snowmobiles in an enclosed 4-place trailer 3-4 times per year and a car once per year. I've never really needed a truck, but I'll never go without one. I buy what I like, and for me it's diesel powered behemoths all the way.
My wife daily drives the Excursion, bought in Nov 03 with 104K miles now has 171K miles. We take it on trips and it tows on average only 5K lbs monthly but has and will tow up to 20K lbs. It gets about 17 mpg on average.
The F250 for the most part is my daily driver or was until the F350 joined the heard last Fall. Bought in Aug of 01 with 40K miles now has 235K miles. Ran about 50K miles a year out of it in 03/04 and towed monthly 15K lbs. Last year it towed around 15K lbs weekly and never skipped a beat. 150K miles on $2K Ford rebuilt tranny.

A PSD that has been reasonable taken care of can live to 250,000 miles before it needs a major overhaul; granted a gasser can do it...not many have. PSD gives you twice the tourqe for less fuel when compaired to a gasser and isn't as unstable (also when compaired to gas). Besides, how many OEM rides out there come from the factory with a turbocharger? Need I say more?

I originally bought my 2006 Crew Cab to replace a '96 Reg Cabdue to my family. I went diesel for the longevity and power to tow. Well, I had a buddy ask me to help him by towing his drag car to the strip because his truck was down. We got to the strip and there were two other diesels playing during the test n tune. My buddy talked me into trying it for 'fun'. Well, $17K later, I'm one of the fastest trucks there AND I still tow my buddies 15K trailer there and back after we both play!!
Sadly, I have two explorer windows open because I just HAVE to find a new turbo to replace the stock VGT. She's still not the fastest, but she's getting there. ROFLMAO!! Gotta love to smokem'!!
OK I was not gonna chime in but for an everyday driver that you are not towing with why deal with the extra maintenance and hassle. I can have 2 oil changes (the v10 is a 5K service not 3K) done at the dealer for what is cost you to do one yourself. I do not need to add fuel additive, can get gas anywhere, longevity is not an issue with a v10 should do 200K no problems, no need to worry about cooling down the turbo when I stop, when I start it on cold winter mornings I have heat in 5 minutes. Towing my jeep on a trailer does not tax it in the least.
If I towed heavy and often or lived in the mountains my answer would be different. To the guy that said he always wanted a PSD while he had his v10 I counter and say that when it was -0 and the truck sat for a week and I went over and fired her up I was glad I did not have the PSD.
Now the most important part, what do you want? If you want a PSD get it, life is too short to fill it with shoulda couda woulda ofs. Just because the V10 made sense for me does not make it right for you. If you want the PSD and a 250 for a DD get it. I love having the truck sure parking can be a hassle sure the mileage is not the best. I could point to 50 things that make it a bad idea BUT I have had my truck for about 2 years and I still smile as I walk up to it and take a second look over my shoulder as I walk away.
Was a DD uptil recently. 20K last year but with diesel at $3.15 all winter it sure did hurt the pocket book. Parking it and only using for towing the trailers or long road trips to Anchorage. Bought a Focus for trips to town and work. Almost 40mpg so until diesel comes down somewhat in price (yeah right, wish milk would also drop to below $6 a gallon) I'll be driving the matchbox car.
How many owners use their truck as a daily driver with very infrequent towing? I'm in the market for a diesel truck and would use it as a daily driver and occasionally to tow my car. I plan on keeping the truck for at least 10 years or even longer considering I only put about 12-14k miles on my current daily driver per year.

I use mine most days and only occasionally to tow. Love em, give you a safe, ready for everything feeling when behind the wheel. I drive around 22k per year on my two personnal trucks.
00 250 PSD 4x4 CC SB, daily driver to work, shopping etc. Here in South Texas it is a must. Driving to Mexico in business matters weekly and, you know this beast has some safety around with Ranch Hand HD bumpers front and rear. Small dents and scratches no problemo. And with a reasonable off road capabilty, the road conditions are not a problem either.
