I purchased a 1999 F350 crew cab stroker yesterday at a auction, when I went to pick it up it would not start they said the solonoid was bad, they used a screw driver to bypass it and it started fine. I replaced the solonoid this afternoon and still no start. Please help, any suggestions would be appreciated.
Well you don't have PATs, so it shouldn't be a key problem. Older fords used a linkage to connect the lock cylinder to the ignition switch, if you have that style try starting by moving the rod. Sence it runs, and your can start it by jumping the sole, I'd try one more solenoid or powering the solenoid instead of jumping. Do this to determin if the new part is functioning. If so, Check fuses and relays then replace the ignition switch.
Im dealing with the exact same issue on my 99 f350. I just replaced the solenoid and it still wont start off the key. All the fuses are good and I can hear the relay clicking when I hit the key but no power out to the starter solenoid. I tried in neutral and still nothing. I suspect the neutral safety switch and im off to the parts store to pick one up. It has sat for about 18months so it may have corroded. I will let you know what happens.
I would take a test light an put it on the single prong wire and check to see if you get signal to the solenoid if you don't then got back to the neutral safety switch, if nothing there then Ignition switch. If you do get a signal check all grounds coming from motor.
Which solenoid are you checking? I ask because I ran into this problem a few days ago on my '99. It would not start, but I could hear two distinct clicks when I turned the key. Turns out it was the solenoid ON the starter that was bad. Since the gear on the bendix of my starter was going bad anyway, I just replaced the whole thing. Works like a champ and turns over faster now.
