I have to choose which rotors to purchase front and rear. I am confident either brand will serve me well. I'm hoping someone might have experience or knowledge on these rotors to help sway my interest. I am awaiting exact prices but I think they will be comparable as well as arrival time.
EBC 3GD rotors are dimpled and slotted. The dimples are supposed to evoke cooling similar to fully drilled holes as well as similar gas evacuation. They only dimple instead of drilling to avoid sacrificing strength like many other rotors that experience cracking from the stress of braking. EBC 3GD rotors also have fins intended to improve cooling, which supposedly are rather noisy. I don't think the noise will be a concern for me competing against a 600 hp Cummins with 5" exhaust and 37" mud tires. The rotors come with a black anodization to delay corrosion.
SSBC Big Bite rotors are drilled and slotted. The company spent years testing and developing these rotors to prevent the durability problems other rotors experience when drilled. They claim to have accomplished enhanced reliability by making their rotors out of their own unique metallurgical formula. They use zinc to prevent corrosion.
I can't imagine much noticeable difference in performance but I don't know having never driven a vehicle with either. The pads will be EBC Yellowstuff front and rear. I don't expect I'll regret either purchase but they are from different suppliers so I have to make a choice. Suggestions?
Don't under estimate how quickly brake noise will drive you nuts. I drive on terribly chopped 35" BFG MTs and my brake squeel is driving me INSANE!
If they are said to be noisy that would be a deciding factor for me. There are other products that will out perform stock brakes without the noise. Let us know how it goes. I'm very interested in seeing which way you go.
I should have given a more detailed description of the noise. It is described by others as a whooshing sound of rushing air much like a turbo. My understanding is that this noise can be heard at most speeds regardless of brake activity. If I were to expect a squealing brake sound I would definitely have zero interest.
I would still have to think long and hard about it. But this is coming from someone who is annoyed by his 6637 when pulling the 5th wheel. Sounds like it is a judgement call. Have you read any significant difference in performance?
On car forums there are more complaints about warping EBC rotors than I can count. Some say the rotors are disappointingly thin and underweight. Most complaints seemed more directed toward the pads as being the cause of rotor warpage. Agreement seems consistent regarding how aggressively the Yellowstuff pads grab though pad and rotor lifespan is often under 7,000 miles. That would translate into only a few months of usage under my truck. I'm now leery of EBC rotors and pads. I've read so any negative posts on Hawk LTS as well that at this point I'm not sure what route to try. Perhaps all of whatever SSBC recommends.
