534 Big Block Transmission alternatives

Hey ya'll! I bought a 76' C900 Fire truck with a 534 and 2 speed rear axle, and want to swap out the 5 speed spicer transmission with a 8-10 speed and delete the split rear end. Does anyone know what model transmission will bolt up to the bellhousing? Or what other transmissions bell housing bolt pattern will match up to the 534. Any help is appreciated!

Large truck transmissions are more or less 'standard', you probably won't have much trouble finding a transmission that will bolt to the 534's bell housing as long as you have a clutch disc with the right number of splines and the right size pilot bearing. What you will have major trouble with will be the shifter. Whatever transmission you use you will need the specific Ford C series top cover/shifter for that particular transmission. That will limit you to using only transmissions that were offered in C series Fords, and the vast majority for those trucks had 5 speeds. What is wrong with the 5 and 2?

"SAE" bell, possibly #2.

X2 on post 2, the shifter is the deal maker/killer.

5 & 2 should be good. There is no magic for more power or MPGs with that truck.....

Nothing is wrong with it as far as I know at this time, besides it being a bit stiff, but that could be the linkages. A friend of mine mentioned a transmission called a Top Loader, he said the top cover/shifter would work on that transmission but I can’t find the one he is talking about.

I’m okay with the 5x2, I just like to have backup plans incase my tranny is screwed up. A friend of mine mentioned that Eaton Fuller or Rockwell makes something called a Top Loader transmission, that comes in a 8-10 speed and has the same top plate/shifter plate as my spicer. I’ve never heard of such a transmission and when I looked into it I found nothing.

But this is all moot until I get my 534 running. She ran for about an hour when I bought her and then sputtered and now she won’t start. She cranks but won’t start. I’m currently diagnosing the fuel system first, but can’t find my fuel pump.

that is awesome to hear! That may be my entire issue then. I will have to check the connections and lines for breaks.

check to see if you have power going to the fuel pump ,and check the voltage.check for a blown fuse .also check and change the fuel filter .and check the carb for a stuck float in the carb . I too would like a different transmission ,I have a 5 speed spicer 5052 ,but would like a spicer 5753,or 5853 .
