Is this a common thing wit the gauge or is it just my truck....I've been trying to figure out my mileage. Anyway, my rear tank gauge said it was empty so I filled it up...it took 9 gallons. The gauge is way off. I was figuring that I was getting 8 mpg....now that I now how much gas I used its more like 15-16mpg. Any thoughts.
Fords are notorious for inaccurate gauges, including the gas gauge. My truck reads empty a long time before it actually is. My Mustang always had variances in the readings on all gauges where oil, fuel and temp gauges would suddenly surge up several widths of the needle, then settle back down to where they belonged. It's been in mothballs for a while now, but I imagine it'll still have that problem when I pull it back out.
To get an accurate mpg reading, I usually fill up my tank until I can actually see the fuel in the filler neck. On my next fill up I do the same thing and check my mileage. I have a diesel, and diesel fuel foams as it's being dispensed, so I never know for sure if it's actually full or not when the pump nozzle kicks off. The only way I get accurate readings is to fill it until I can see it.
I Have to top off tank and check mileage.240 -250 a tank If on open roads. 2 1/2 Tanks a week at 15-16 MPG . I run over 550 mile week right now. Course I can't fit anywhere near the capacity of tank even when run dry. like 13-14 gal if lucky and the front is worse.
Don't know the milage but, when I was in Nashville TN for a couple years I could go from the south side of Atlanta to the north side of Nashville on 17 gallons. And that was running 80 to 90 w/my '91(see below)
