My Bronco already has a hitch but it doesn't have the trailer wiring. I want to add a 7-plug trailer wiring. Can it be done? And how much can I pull with the Bronco?
You can pull just about anything (anyone else remember the commercial where they pulled an house with a F250 4x4?). Stopping is the big thing. When I bought the trailer to tow my Vette I figured in the trailer weight, the cars weight, and all the spare junk weight I would need to race. This came up to around 6200 lbs so I bought a trailer with self activating brakes. I use this style of trailer brakes because of a couple of different reasons.
One is that the system is basically just like the system on a truck without the brake booster. Two is less things to worry about going wrong (wiring, power failure, selniods ect..) Three I don't have to tear things off my truck if I sell it to use the trailer with my new truck (four trucks and still the same trailer). Four is because I can tow the trailer behind anything and it will have brakes.
I also tow a 20' bayliner with an 5.7lt I/O. The tag says 3800lbs with trailer. This is I feel the safe upper limit for towing without brakes. I still make sure I travel a safe distance behind anyone espcailly on the highway, but I do feel safe with it.
Sure you can add a 7 wire plug to the truck...don't use "scotch locks"
...don't use "scotch locks"...don't use "scotch locks" get the idea. The standard trailer plug is 4 wires but the 7 has a pin for electric brakes. You will have to add a wire to the electric brake switch (which you will probably mount under the dash panel) along with the activator. If you add any wires use solder and shrink wrap tubing.
