I have a 1987 F250 6.9 IDI and a few questions for anyone who can help.. I arrived at work the other morning to find fuel leaking out of my rear filler hose and cap(I have dual tanks). So I switched from the rear tank to the front to seeif it would stop . It did not and the gauge does not work any more switched on the front or back. Has anyone had this happen to them.... I'm thinking it might be the fuel selector valve(it is a six port number).
Welcome to the forum. You'll get lots of help here with any problem especially if you mention the specific problem that you're having in the title. A lot of the guys don't have enough time to look through all the posts but will definitely check out a problem that they have a lot of experience with or are currently going through. I have 5 trucks with fuel selector valves and one of them is doing strange things. I will pay close attention to this thread to see what comes up. I am guessing that your selector valve is pulling fuel out of the front tank and then sending the extra pressurized fuel that is surplus back to the back tank instead of the tank that it is pulling the fuel from. Let's wait and see what others come up with.
Sounds like from your description the selector valve on the frame isn't completely switching from one tank to the other. Pumping fuel from one tank to the other. Another thing which might be happening is that the rocker switch might be feeding power to both sides instead of one side of the switch causing the valve to malfunction.
I had a gas truck a while back doing the same thing and it was the tank selector valve pumping the fuel from the rear tank into the front one and overflowing it...
