Of course it depends on load and conditions. That being said, I tow a 6,500 lb. travel trailer and I see temps around 180-190 on flat road and 200-220 on long hills.

I wonder if this graph is accurate for our trannys...

I read somewhere that Mercon V fluid is synthetic...I wonder how this affects this....

Synthetic fluid or not, heat kills more trannys than anything else. If you are worried about overheating, add a larger trans cooler to your truck. The B&M stacked plate design is a very efficient cooler for its size. The stock trans cooler has a thermostatic bypass valve on it that does not pass fluid to the cooler until 185 degrees F.

Well, just to give you all an update on this whole fiasco. I took my truck to my dealership, and it came out that my transmission was, indeed, $%^# up. More than I thought. I wound up having to have the entire transmission replaced with a Ford Reman unit. Now, what do you guys think, my truck only has 22,000 miles on it...should my transmission have failed at only this mileage, and should it have taken the kind of abuse that I was throwing at it?? I bought this truck used back in Nov, and I do not know what the previous owner towed or put it through either, so that could be a factor also. But heres the kicker guys....when they ran my VIN, I was out of warrenty by 2 months...and Ford said "too bad for you"...and wouldnt cover my transmission. I had to shell out over $2800 for a 22,000 mile truck to get it repaired! It runs great now. But...still...I do not think at 22,000 miles I should have had such a failure, whether or not, I was abusing it at 200 deg F. What do you guys think?? I am thinking about writing to Ford to and see if they are willing to respond to a nice "customer concern" letter about why I had to pay almost $3,000 to fix a 20k mile vehicle, that, in my opinion, they should have been able to what WE call in my Mopar dealership "goodwill" warrrenty it to me. Any thoughts from you guys that work in the Ford dealers?? Is it worth me writing to Ford...probably not I suppose, huh?? Oh well...just wanted to let you guys know what happened with my story.

What was date that it originally happened and what was the date you took it to the dealer?

Maybe if you were the original owner they may have made an exception. The other thing is, when should the dealer "cut off" the warranty repairs. Should it be 1 month after the warranty is up? And when should they cut off spiltting the repair cost after it's out of warranty?

I'd like to think that my dealer, who does all of my service, would cut me some slack if a had a problem shortly after my warranty was up. What do I mean shortly? I don't know.

you have got to be kidding me.

you were rocking the truck back and forth, rapidly switching gears and you know you exceeded 200F on transmission temps...I've got to ask though, how fast was your spedometer when you were stuck. 50 or 60 mph?...how much do you expect the transmission to take?

okay, you're truck has 22k miles right now. you could take one that has 50 miles, abuse it the same, and probably see that transmission act up as well

why is it Fords fault for what you did? it's not a matter of the truck having a "weak" transmission, it's a matter of user abuse. sorry it cost you so much to get your truck fixed. hopefully you'll be more carefull next time.

I have to agree with Tylus....you could've ruined a properly broken in tranny with 10k on the clock, running synthetic fluid, with the hot-******* you were doing.

Well, come on, he never mentioned how much "abuse" the tranny took in the first place, it's a bit unfair to assume that it was entirely his fault! IF he got the wheels to a complete stop between going foreward and backward, it should not have caused any undue damage on the tranny.

I would recommend writing to Ford, seeing if they would consider splitting the cost of the repair, at least. I have had a couple good experiences with Chrysler doing that kind of thing, Ford may very well do the same.

Good luck, and I'm glad you got your truck fixed!

See if you can get the dealership to go to bat with Ford for an AWA (after warranty adjustment), sometimes they will help out with big repairs that happen close to the end of the warranty. I hope they take care of you.

I guess I should clarify what I was talking about. There is no way you can get transmission temps to 200F just by rocking the truck. You get them there by keeping the pedal down and smoking all 4 tires, then switching to the other direction and smoking the tires. Repeatedly.

wish you the best of luck in writing Ford
