Anyone had any luck running long tubes on a 91 4x4 302 with a manual transmission (ZF ) ?
I'm currently about to start assembling my engine and will hopefully be installing late next month, So I'm gonna need to find something to work for me pretty soon.
I'm not sure if it matters but I'm running World Products, Windsor JR. cyl heads. I definetly want to go with ceramic coated if possible.
I've read in previous post that long tubes don't work when running a manual trans, Also some people say they will work with minor frame modifications so having said all of that , I'm just not sure what to do.
I planning on running true duals with an H-Pipe ( 2 1/2'' stainless ) , I guess that will all have to be custom built??? Unless anyone knows of a manufacture that offers a kit ???
If anyone has any pics relating to any of this , I sure would like to check them out. Thanks
Thats too much exhaust if you ask me. I would go with NO MORE than dual 2 1/4 and thats only if I were racing and thus spending all my time above 4000 rpm. For the street I would use a single 2 1/2 or 3 at the most. These came from the factory with a single 2 1/4. Most of the restriction is in the y-pipe and maybe the cats, not the tail pipe.I have exhaust manifolds, a custom y-pipe, no cats and single 2 1/4 tail pipe with a DNA muffler and my 302 performs great!

Yeah.. I have seen that stated here but I don't see how it would make any difference, the manual tranny's are usually smaller than the autos, wraping some custom plumbing around it should be easier.
Matt.. have you changed anything else besides the heads? What kind of difference did they make?
I know for a fact that if you use the throlley long tube Y pipe design i think there called you will rub on the front D/S and X-member with very little articulation. My buddys 91 F-150 302 H.O. with Zf 5spd rubbed on the 4ich lift and the 6inch. Without some minor fab work on these parts you going to rub.
I've only seen a couple pairs of long tube headers for these engines and I havn't seen any real good ones.
Could use a shorty header or a custom long tube.
I was thinking about making my own headers with a J-bend kit, bandsaw, and welder. The other issue is having the right flanges for the heads you're using. I might be using even larger heads for my motor and I'd need the right flanges, then the right size tubing.

Well I haven't assembled to motor yet so I'm not sure how the Windsor Jr's are gonna work out but I hear they are pretty good. As far as changing anything else,,, I'm going to go back with a carb instead of injection. I know, I know.... I just like old school better.
The carb is a Holley 670 Truck Avenger, Comp Cam ( 212/218 477/484 ), Harland Sharp 1.6 roller rockers. Performer Intake, 1.94 & 1.60 valves, TRW Flat Tops, All MSD ignition ( Pro Billet Dizzy, 6-AL , Blaster 3 coil )
I'm hoping on having the motor on the dyno by the 3rd week of April ???
I'll let you know how it does.
Well, I reckon I could go with shorties. I'm building for low end torque so I was thinking long tubes with a smaller primary would be the way to go... But If I gotta go short, I guess that is what I'll do.
I got shorties on my 95 302 and when I went from the stock manifolds to these factory lightnings I noticed a big oomph in the 2700 on range....and it helped my mileage....as for the h-pipe?I'd opt for an X pipe instead....figuratively it would get better flow than the H pipe...and you could make it.

After being on the phone for about an hour today with Dynomax tech support, I may have found something that will work for me. They say they are std length, I thought this style was long tubes ??? Anyhow they are definetly not shorties ( I had them fax me a print ) they are ceramic coated and the part # is 86054. Has anyone run these ? I've never run Dynomax, Are they a good quality product ?
