Okay I am not sure if this should be in here or the tire section, but figured since its a 1977 I would post in here.
Truck: 1977 f-250 4x4 with 300 straight 6, 16" rims and currently has 245/75/16's on it, 4 speed manual and 4:10 gears.
I use it to haul wood and maple syrup sap around so it sees pretty heavy loads close max and sometimes a little bit more. Only drive short distance with the loads on it maybe 15mins total driving time. Some of the driving is off-road (nothing major, but semi cleared trail in wooded/farm area.
I need new tires and want something with a good amount of tread and can handle the mud fairly well, along with the ability of handling the weight of the loads I put on the truck.
What should I be looking for in a tire? what load rating (D,E)? I dont mind going larger than whats on it now, so if it would be better to go that way I could.
Pretty much any tire should work. If you are used to the ones you got then get the same size. You are really limited to the width of your rim. If they are factory rims then you cant go very wide. Id stick with something around 235/85/16. Theres a huge selection of treads for that size.
I run 285/75/16 on my '78 f250 and pull very large loads in trailers. These are a little taller than stock but will easily clear in the stock fenderwells without lifting. Load range E will help out but going slightly wider will add weight capacity also. Many styles will work in mud but the more aggressive the noisier on the road and also they tend to wander more on the highway. You just have to decide what you need the most and pick from that. Good luck!
Check out my gallery, I have 255/85/16 on my 77 F-150, they are Super Swamper TRXUS Mud Terrains, I LOVE THEM. They are not noisy, are aggressive enough for most of what I will get into, and are load range E. They were fairly cheap, about $125 each. Depends on where your at, check 4wheelparts.com or ntwonline.com

My loads are all in the bed of the truck. I have a flatbed on the truck so fenderwells are not a problem for me at least not into the rear. I could careless about the road noise as its only used as a work truck and most of the driving is backroads. I'll check out the tires in the size you are running ans see whats out there.
