I know they are expensive but AMP research http://www.amp-research.com/ power deployable boards are not only bullet proof and super-engineered but blow people away when they come out. They were originally designed as an OEM option and passed all their tests (3 years). $1,300
I have a set of Amps on my 04 FX4 scab...you can't see them when they are not in use...open the door and they swing down about 6" and away from the body. I can walk into the cab. Absolutely worth every penny I spent.
I like the factory 5 inch because of the taller pad and the wider surface for helping my wife who has a bad arthritic knee to get into the vehicle. The narrow ones were more of a slip risk and more difficult for her to negotiate. They still retain the sporty chrome nerf bar look but have more of the stable platform of the full body boards.
I agree the 5" steps are a nice looking bar. If you add them as accessory from Ford when the truck is brand new you get the same 3 year warranty as when they are factory installed, otherwise it is a 1 year warranty (at least in Canada) The aftermarket makes some nice steps too, but only the Westin seem to stand up to rust. Other brands have created a big headache for me with rust issues. Does anyone have another aftermarket brand that stands up after 3 years in a salt climate?
Down here in SW Oklahoma they dont use salt on the roads in the winter. We hardly get any snow.
But when I lived in Kansas City they dumped it a lot and cars rusted fast. If I still lived there or anywhere similar I would have to opt for a polished stainless and an alloy bracket if possible. Bottom blast the vehicle and pressure clean every week, wax as often as possible.
The only problem I see with factory mounting in your climate is the possible rusting of the mounting area used on the body. It has to be not only sturdy when new but remain so through out the life of the vehicle. A frame mount would be a better option in that kind of salty climate. IMHO
A real good rust preventative undercoat would also be a good thing, especially in the area of the factory mountings.
