The engine of my 01 F250 PSD makes a lot of racket when I take off. Specifically, it sounds 'clanky' and then as the engine warms up it is less so. Any ideas as to the problems?
Join the diesel world. There are a million avenues you can go down to help cure the rattle and noise these things make. I have yet to find a cure after half heartedly trying everything that doesn't require major surgury. I can tell you this, Cold air makes these things noisy, period. I think the northerners are the ones to always complain about it because 10 or 20 degrees makes a huge difference. The tuners turned up produce more noise and all the upgrades to the intakes and exhaust seem to make even more noise. See a pattern here, power improvements make noise. Invest in dynamat soundproofing if you want to help the cab noise. Thats my next move. Don't get me wrong, air in the fuel system and injector problems create more noise, but even at their best they are noisy.

Thanks.
Modifications you can make to the engine to reduce noise are:
1. install a HPX.. a high pressure crossover pipe.. about $50.
2. fuel line and intank mod's.. reduces the air in the diesel.
3. add some biodiesel.. i run about 2 gallons per tank..
4. change to synthetic oil .. i use shell 5w40.
You do a search in the forum for how to do the mod's.
But, yes your engine is going to noisey when cold until it warms up.
My truck is noisey when it is cold. It has 15 W40 in it from the dealer and I have not had to change it yet. Driving for a long period I noticed the engine does get quieter. Seems that it takes a while to warm oil and all.
