Tire Upgrade

Hello Ford Forum.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

I have a 2001 Stock Ford Excursion XLT 4x4 / V-10 engine. I want to install 4 Michelin 285/75/R16 Tires on the stock rims that came with the excursion. What's on the excursion now is 265/75/R16 Pirelli Scorpions A/T. Will the Michelin Tires fit on there without any rubbing or modifying the stock the way it is now. Thank's alot for any info. that you can give me. Newbie in Iowa.<o></o>

I tryed many different types of tire sizes before i went with the ones that I have now. The ones I tryed first where the BFG 315/75/16. They rubbed at 80% turn. I wanted to keep the stock rims so i downsized. The people at conrads said that 305/75/16 would rub and 295/75/16 might rub, so i didnt want to take a chance. I ordered the 285/75/16 and they worked perfect. The guy at the tire shop said that the tire has about an inch till it rubs at full turn.

Yup, we have 285/75-16 Yokohama's on my wife's 2000 Ex Limited on stock rims. No rubbing at all.

Be sure to check to load rating for your new tires, and check the pressures regularly.

I went with the 295/75-16 Yokohama's on the wife's X and haven't had any problems. You do have to remember though that the speedo will read a little slower than actual.

Do you have pics of the 295s. Also who makes a 305/75/16, all I could find were 305/70/16s

interesting, i have been told by three tire dealers i will have problems with 285/75R16's on stock rims because of the 7" rim width. i tow a 10K travel trailer so i am very concerned about weight issues. what they tell me is that the tread will bow because the tire is designed for 7.5" or 8" rim. any thoughts?

thats what I heard to

I ended up with 285/70/17 on 17x8 Rims

I would have liked 295/75/16, but I was afraid about the narrow rim width too. Better safe than sorry I guess.

Actually. I had a rubbing issue with only the driver's side front of my 4x4 X. For some reason, even with the 285/70/17 (same overall size as 785/75/16 just diff rim size) the inner fender was rubbing whenever I turned and hit a bump. I just drilled 2 holes in it for a zip-strip and tied it back and so far no problems

The problem here is some of us are forgetting about the crappy springs we all have in our X from the factory. On a brand new 4x4 X you can fit up to a 33inch tire. If you have had some miles and usage and now are sagging in front you will most likely need to drop to 31's. It really just depends on how old those springs and shocks are.

It was some issue with the inner-fender piece. The one on the driver's side (on the part closer to the rear of the vehicle) was closer to the tire than the passenger side was. I think the plastic on the drivers side was just deformed a little bit, because the other side was fine. Really minor rubbing only on the inner-fender plastic. I just pulled it back with a zip strip, now its fine.

Everything is stock except for rims/tires. Not sure of the backspacing, but they are 8x17's with 285/70/17's BFG All-Terrains. If it makes a difference, its a 2000 4x4 with 99000 mi. (Im can barely wait for it to roll over 100,000 now, its a killin me )

I have a 2000 4x2. I pull the occasional single car hauler and used to pull a 26' sailboat weighing in at roughly 8000lbs. The 295s have never been a problem and I like the added ride height.
