Just ordered my first to mods for my 97 f350 psd. Picked up a tymar intake and downpipe. The question I have is I am still not sure what to do with the exhaust (stacks or straight pipe) but do I need a turn out or something to fill the void for now or can I run the exhaust just out of the downpipe? Might be a stupid question I dont know. Thanks for the input.

well first off, congratulations, im sure ull be happy. as for just runnin the downpipe, im not sure if its good or bad for it. i have a buddy that was doin his exhaust on his 99 and ran just the downpipe for about 2 days till his exhaust came, let me tell u, u could really hear the turbo. but im not sure if its bad for it or not. u can do it, it sounds good haha
When I get a new truck, the first i always do it try to make my own exhaust... it lasts for about a month then i get it done professionally! But what I learned is that if your going to make your own exhaust make sure it exits behind the cab other wise you'll keep smelling it in your cab and besides it's dangerous! Also with diesels keep in mind the exhaust gets super hot so you don't want it to be coming out in a spot that will melt anything. Soot is another factor.
If you can I would try and buy 4" exhaust pipe and run it with 45 elbow out in front of your rear tire. I've done that, as well as alot of other of these guys. Now that you have a downpipe and if you get rid of your cat and muffler... the turbo will sing sing sing!!! =D
I'm sure others will join in but this is just my thoughts! Good luck!!
Good choice going with Dale at Tymar. He is a good mand and gives good sound advice.
I have spent quite a bit ot time and money with him recently and and very happywith the experience.
I ran my ford for about a week with just a down pipe off the turbo and had no issues. Like others said though, be aware of the fumes coming into the cab when you are not moving.
I would think once you get the down pipe installed that you could go to an exhaust shop and get a straight pipe put on for real cheap. Now more than 200 bucks.
congrats on the buys, i pretty much just bought the same stuff to go along with my stacks, and fyi stacks sound AMAZING even without the downpipe!! (not tymar though, i ordered some company's that i don't even know what they're name is) and actually i've noticed that they don't get too hot (i can touch them right after i shut the truck off after a ~45 minute lead foot drive!) can't wait to put on my downpipe and intake too!

Probably not gonna happen there WhickeyRichie. Its not the most legal of things to run straight pipe and exhaust shops dont usually partake in the act of muffler or cat delete systems. If you get caught runnin straight pipe system an exhaust company built you, they'll get fined up the butt.
hey glasseater where did you get you stacks from and how big did you deside to go. I am thinking about going with 5'' turnouts. I want something you can hear from the next town over if I get on it. I thought about 6'' stacks but it might be overpowering with a reg cab.
Well buyin a chunk of pipe from an exhaust shop and having an straight pipe exhaust system made are apples and oranges. I find it hard to believe that a chunk of 4" pipe is $200 but it must be a Cali thing.

i got mbrp 5" dual slash cut stacks from www.usdieselparts.com, i love the sound!!!! i'm hoping that once i put on my new downpipe (comin in the mail tomorrow!!) that it'll be even louder!!!! oh and the stacks fit real nice too, you jsut drill a hole through the bed (after lining everything up), cut out your old exhaust after you measure how much you need left after the cat, than just weld or clamp the exhaust on, the only problem i had was that the adapter was from 3-4", stock '94.5-97 psd's were 3 1/2... so it took some welding to get it to match up right, it was only like a 2 hour job, about an hour of that was spent making sure the stacks were perfectly straight, exact same heights, raise em/lower em to my wishes (just slip the stacks up and down than tighten the clamps), and getting them to be the same distance from the side of the bed
Dale is in the process of makin a website for his Tymar products. It'll be nice when he gets it done. So for the time being it is phone only. Do you need his number?
