Does anyone know if there is any software out there that I can use to tune my '06 F-150? The tuners are too damn expensive for me. Thanks in advance...
in all reality ....350.00 for a tuner isn't to bad.....(price of an edge)...caues you think if they do make software to hook into a computer ....you then need the hook up from the computer to the truck's data port just like a tuner....then you have to buy the software to do all the programing.....it's the same concept as a tuner....you just don't have it in the truck so i can't see it being much cheaper....if at all....and thats if they even make anything like that....
I have seen a couple of computer based software that is cheaper, but they are also a lot harder to negotiate than a tuner.
I have always suggested that unless you are VERY proficient and VERY knowledgable in what all a PCM controls, what the standard settings are, and what each variable of adjustment are - it is better to use a tuner over the computer software programs. There is just too many ways using the software to change settings, variables, and tunes that could destroy your engine and you not even know you changed something.
Not trying to talk you out of it, but I would really check into it before hooking one up.

that was my other point also but i wasn't sure about how the software would work and what you could change.....seams like it's a dangerous thing...
They can be used, but because of the complexity of some of the programs, you can make a mistake and never know you did it. A friend of mine is a pretty knowledgable person and learned this the hard way on his Mustang. He understood what all of the sensors were, variables were asking for, etc, but he did not know how some of the changes he made were actually so drastic that they created havoc on the system.
Lariat22 - Know I am not trying to talk you out of anything or even talk you into anything. I would just feel bad about giving you a lot of info on one of these programs and something go nuts...
I couldn't agree with you folks more. If I messed with the brains of my RC car and hosed it I would be... disappointed, to say the least. If I messed with the brains of my truck and killed it? How can you begin to explain that? These tuners are expensive but if you intend to mess with the truck's programming they're the only way to go.
Look at it this way. How comfortable are you reloading & configuring the software on your home pc ? Can you configure a home network ? What do you do when you make a change to your pc & it gets a Blue Screen of Death(BSOD) ?
I will stay with my Edge tuner or a X-Cal II from Troyer Performance.
Well guys thanks for the advice I think that might be a bit much for me to tackle, but on the other hand in response to sysman_rick, I am a network manager at work and know my way around the computer pretty well. Was just looking for a bit cheaper way to tune my truck.
