I have an 04 FX4 with 45k that I bought new. Last night I am on my way home on the interstate doing about 75mph when I need to merge left due to traffic coming in on my right. I put the pedal all the way to the floor to avoid slowing down the traffic coming from behind when the motor rev'd really high but the tranny did not react for a couple seconds and then all I heard was a loud thud and the whole truck shook. It is like the tranny didn't know if it should downshift or remain in 4th. Like I said it was WOT so it sounded pretty harsh. Anyone else experience this before. I believe it has done this before but never this severe. I only happens when I am WOT trying to pass or speed up.
That loud thud you are hearing is probally your acuator piston hanging up inside the sleeve. Mine has been doing from first to second under hard acceleration. My whole truck will shake when it finally does engage. So far my tranny has been rebuilt and no change as of yet the dealer cant figure out whats wrong. Test equipment does not flag any faults. Does this happen everytime in yours or just intermittenly?
It has happened maybe 5 or 6 times over the life of the truck. However, last night sounded and felt really bad. It seems to want to do it if you take your foot off the gas and then hammer it while the rpms and truck are deaccelerating.
I had the same issue with my 04 Screw whenever I was in 4th and got on the gas to pass or when it downshifted to go up a hill it would shudder before it would go into gear. Took it into ford they changed out the torque converter and that solved my problem. Hope this helps.

Was it under warranty. If not how much did it set you back.
It'll happen when I hit the brakes and then accel hard. Usually when I'm sitting in traffic. It will also do it at random times. Mostly when I've been driving for longer than 30 minutes. Anyone else notice it doing after driving for a certain period of time?
