My nieghbor has a tester and it said that I had a bad EGR valve. I bought one at an auto parts store and when I went to change it I cant find out what size wrench is supposed to fit on the, exhast tube side fitting. Its bigger that 1" and smaller than 1/16. I have 25 years in the maintenance field as a glorified wrench spinner but I am not sure if its metric or american. If its metric what size is it. Thanks in advance hopefully for an answer to my question..
There is no code that will condemn the EGR valve. There *IS* a code for "insufficient EGR flow (P0401)" which theoretically COULD be a bad EGR valve, but I can tell you from experience this is almost never the case.
If this is the code that the tester showed, the problem is most likely a bad DPFE sensor (also know as EGR position sensor)... it is much, much easier to replace.
The DPFE is a small rectangular box.. maybe 4 inches by 2 inches held on with two small bolts with an electrical connector and two small hoses going to it (from the exhaust). It's usually mounted on the side of the intake and is either metallic, or made of black plastic (both of which are interchangeable). The original style had a metal housing, the updated design had plastic.
