looking at a 97 f250 diesel 4x4 xlt. what's the difference between HD (heavy duty) and non-HD. also, what is the off-road package (assuming it's a factory option). this truck has 77k miles on it. looks and runs clean. dealer is asking 19,900. kbb says 18,400. should i be grabbing this with these low miles? thanks.
I'm not sure of the changeover years, but the HD or Superduty trucks have solid axles different frame and body. However, they don't coincide with the "new style" 97 f-150. The heavy duty trucks didn't change until 98 (i think). So a 97 f250 diesel would be the old style body and frame and a Heavy Duty model, I don't recall if the old body styles had a light duty and heavy duty f250, but there are less differences between an old style LD and HD than a new style LD and HD. A new style LD f250 is a 3/4 ton f150, and a HD f250 is a superduty truck which is completely different. Currently, they call the LD F250 a 7700 F150 (i own one) because too many people were confused by the F250 that looked like an F150, and the F250SD that looked nothing like an F150. The LD F250 of 98 and 99 were far more common than 7700 F150's are of 00-03 because I don't think most people realize what it is. The 7700 is think is marketed more for the casual user who needs more than average payload but doesn't need a superduty (commercial level) truck.
