I am about to change the oil in my 3.0L 2004 Ranger for the first time (I just bought it used, 67,000 miles), and I want to know if there is any oil y'all recommend? I was planning on just using the motorcraft oil filter and oil, but wasn't sure if anyone had found something better. thanks!
i have 146K on my truck (original owner) and i have never used anything other than the motorcraft filters and i swear by quaker state oil.. in a pinch i will use castrol but 99% of the time its quaker state... i always use conventional oil and i am FANATICAL about doing it between 2500-3000 miles.
I have found that alot of people like valvoline but i never cared for it at all one thing that is for sure is that people are very brand loyal if they have a particular oil they like so you may get alot of varying answers here and knocking of some brands much like you get guys knocking brands of cars.. hope this helps ya
I'd always suggest the Motorcraft filter (mine takes the FL-1A, but yours may be different. Walmart carries them, here anyways.). Though anything but Fram will do the job pretty well.
As for oil, that's your choice. I ran Pennzoil for a while before switching to Mobil 1 after hearing many good reviews on this board. Just remember you get what you pay for. I would suggest sticking with what was used previously, if you know what the previous owner used, and don't switch to dino if the previous owner used synthetic or vice versa.
The MC 5W20 is great oil. Wally World has it pretty cheap and you can get it in a 5 quart container. I use mostly the WIX filters I buy on line but would also use the MC filters in a heartbeat. I do not recommend you use FRAM.
I also do an oil analysis at Blackstone Labs every other change to make sure all is healthy with the engine. Been doing this for years with all my vehicles and I highly recommend it.
thanks a lot guys! i think i am going to go on with the motorcraft oil filter and i will find out what oil the previous owner was using. thanks again for your help!
