1987 Front Drive Questions

I have some questions about my front drive. First, is there an easy way to test to make sure that it is engaging?

And second...So, I know that on the '87 the hubs are flanged. I don't think Warn makes a replacement. Has anyone found replacements other that direct from Ford (Expensive).

I don't know if anyone makes aftermarket flange style hubs. I seem to recall someone saying Mile Marker or Superwinch does.

To see if it's working you could lock the hubs, put the t-case in 4hi and remove the rear d/s. If it moves/drives, it's working!

Otherwise leave the hubs unlocked, put it in 4hi, and (carefully) watch for the front d/s to turn while someone drives the truck.

To test....find some mud. Lock 'em in and punch the throttle. If its working the front tires will immediately fling mud all over and you will start moving. If not....yer probably stuck. hehehehe.

Actually, you can raise the truck off all 4 wheels, lock 'er in and put it in drive and see if they are all moving.

I have an '87 and DID NOT have flange style hubs. I even had the 5 screw dust caps instead of 3 screw.....so no mods....simple rip off and slap on new hubs....warn, superwinch, mile marker...all work.

If you have the flanges then either spend $$$$$ for ford or spend a little less and switch out your spindles, etc. to convert to non-flange hubs and put on manual locking hubs. If you have 3 screw dustcap auto hubs then you have to change the spindle nuts from those for auto to those for manual then you can use any aftermarket locking hubs to replace.

Do a search....lots of info here.

easiest way to test your front auto hubs is jack the front up, use jackstands, get under there and rotate your front driveshaft. If the wheels don't turn, either they aren't locked or you are spinning backwards. If you spin backwards when you are sure they are locked, they will still turn. After this, to unlock, get out from under and spin each wheel backwards one at a time, they will unlock, then test by spinning them forward and seeing if the front driveshaft still moves.
