I thought this was very interesting...turns out (according to these reviews anyway) that the stock Continental and General Tires are among the worst tires you can buy...
Probably to save a buck or three, and, I would guess, because no one tire is going to satisfy everyone who actually does care what tires are on their truck.
A cheap tire satisfies the people who are totally focused on the bottom line, and then the optional, upgraded tire is offered on some trim levels to satisfy a few other people. The rest of us bite the bullet and put our favorite tire on as soon as possible.
because you get these tires mostly on the lower end F-150's. If you look at the upper end trucks, they rarely have these cheap tires. (my FX4 came with Goodyear Wrangler AT/S) When people buy an XL or STX, they aren't looking to spend alot of dough. So Ford slaps a set of ok rims and "ok" tires to keep the price down.

What about an XLT that has most of the options? It has all the options that I'll ever need and more, but it still came with junk for tires.
The FX4 has an offroad package, so Ford slapped the cheapest set of offroading tires on is all. Wrangler ATS's are far from a great tire when comparing them to the rest.
If you live and die by Tire Racks survey, here's where your top quality Goodyears on your top quality truck rate. They're about 5th from dead last. I bet they're not even Light Truck rated. I'm sure Ford really splurged on those puppies, since the FX4 is so much more truck and all!
Several new GM trucks I've bought that were loaded also came with the cheapest Uniroyal Tiger Paws. In fact, when I replaced those tires, my buddy who owns a tire shop told me that the factory installed Tiger Paws are cheaper and lower rated than the exact same set/ model that you can buy from him. Apparently, car manufacturers buy and install lower rated tires than the exact same models of tires you or I can buy from the store.

wow, thanks for the blast for my opinion. actually, if you want to get your facts straight before you talk out your butt:
1. they are LT rated, load range C (load rande E is available)
2. look at the prices of these tires at Tire Rack. 275x65x18 run $190 ish per tire while the #1 tire run is about $120 for the 276x55x20 (they don't have the same size in a 18" rim, which is probably why Ford runs this tire on their 20" rims)
3. there are only 5 tires on your Vaunted list that even offer the tire in my trucks size. granted, I would have been happier with some Dueler A/T Revo's, but the Wrangler AT/S is still a great tire.
I've said it before, and I think it still holds true. Drive a low model truck, then drive a Lariat or a King Ranch. The trucks are completely different. There are obviously better options which make them alot nicer trucks. Tires are just one of those things. Who wants to pay $40,000 for a truck with cheap no name tires?
FWIW my "$42,000 FX4 S/Crew" has so-called high end tires, which happen to be substandard in my opinion. They're Pirelli Scorpion ATR 275/55/R20 and they have the dreaded flat-spot-when-cold problem. Very annoying. Can't do a thing about it either. Just my $.02.
