I just purchased a 1969 F-100. The person I purchased it from said it had a 400 cubic inch motor. Is that the modified 351 I have read about? What is the best way to comfirm what I have? I am just trying to figure out what I got.
Tracy, the 351M and 400 shared the same block. The difference is in the crank and pistons. To find out for sure you will have to pull the oil pan. With the pan off look for casting numbers on the crankshaft. If it's a 351M it will have 1K cast into it. If it's a 400 look for 5M , 5MA or 5MAB.The pistons are the same diameter the difference is in the pin placement. Both engines share the same connecting rods. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info. When I purchased the truck all the guy would say is that it is a 400 cubic inch engine. I am kinda new to Ford's, so sorry for the dumb questions, so would that be the same as calling it a 400 sytle motor?
Tracy, No question is dumb when you are trying to learn.I've found those who tell you a question is dumb are usually not very bright themselves. In answer to your last post, yes, I believe some folks call them a 400 style motor. One thing to look for is a 1" high web that sticks straight out from the intake manifold surface just to the left of the distributor hole. This is a dead giveaway you have a 351M/400 block. If you have more questions feel free to fire away and I'll do my best to answer. If I can't I'm sure there's someone else on here who can.
welcome to F.T.E. Tracy.
does the valve cover look like this??
the 335 series engine has a raised portion on the valve cover, then it goes flat.
if it does it is most likely a 335 series 400 cubic inch engine.
Thanks for the information. I went out and took some pics of the motor. Maybe this will help. To me the valve cover looks like the one in the pic that TJC sent. Howerver, I dont want to assume. Here is the link to the pics.
A unique feature of the 351C/351M/400 engines is how the fuel pump mounts.
The fuel pump mounting bolts are at the top and bottom ~12 o'clock and 6 o'clock on the pump.
These are the ONLY Ford V8 engines that used this design of fuel pump mounting.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Every other Ford V8 had the fuel pump bolts side to side = 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock.

the way i can tell the diffrance is take out a spark plug and messure the stoke bring the psiton to tdc put a pencil in the hole and mark right where the sparkpulg threds start. then turn the engein over buy hand so the piston is a bdc then mark the pencil agian the messsure between the to marks if ti is around 4 inches then you have a 400 if you have around 3.5 you have a 351 this only takes about 10min and is easier then removing the oil pan
The tag says 400cid 6.6L. Just trying to make sure that I am calling it the right thing by saying its a 400. Not many people that I know here around the house knows to much about Fords. Come here to the experts for answers.
Hey Tracy, I just checked out the pics.Whoever did the swap must have had a pretty good idea what they were doing. From what the pics show it's not all hacked up like some swaps I've seen. It's definitely an M block.Good luck with your new ride.
Thanks for the info Clay. According to the VIN it had a 360 in it from the factory. The truck runs good and sounds good. Just not that great on the gas. I have been enjoying it and look forward to making it nicer than it already is. I think should be able to get a few good years out of it and I think its more than worth the 2K I paid for it.
